Does anyone have suggestions about staying in the shelters ar the falcon state park? I see that there are 2 levels. The premium has a steel door and air conditioner with bunk beds.
I am not sure if the standard is lockable and whether or not they have beds.
Would you consider it a safe place to stay and park your boat at night?
Also, are the bathroom and showers decent?
I will probably be by myself for around 7 days.

Its fine down there. My brother used to stay in the shelters there all the time. I would get the premium, never know when its get to get warm in Zapata. I would brIng my own air mattress. The mattresses on their cots arent very comfortable, even when you stack 2 on top of each other. Also, its a pretty good run for gas and food so make sure you prepare for that.

I can run by there and check them out if you want. Take some pics and send them to you.

What time frame are you looking at?

Tommar, I am considering going in about 2 weeks.
Jobie mentioned that it was a long run for food and gas.
I will eat out most of the time. It looks to me like it is not far into town to eat.
My bigger concern is safety.
Any info or pictures would be awesome!
Also, I don't think air conditioning would be a big deal but a locking door would be!

Safety is fine. Zapata is a solid 30 minutes drive, Roma is probably more like 20. I used to have a travel trailer parked in state park, which is the first creek north of the boat ramp and never had an issue.

I've stayed in the standard screen shelters many times, there are no beds in them but the doors are lockable. The bathroom facilities are great too. No safety issues.

I have stayed in them for up to 3 weeks at a time. There are two double decker wood bed frames in each shelter. You have to supply mattress and bedding. There is also a large picnic table inside. There is no inside water, but there is an outside water faucet just outside the door. There is a window a/c unit, but no heat. Bring your own electric heaters in the winter. There is no refrigerator. Restroom/shower house can be as close as 25 yards to as far as 125 yards away, depending upon which shelter you get. Primitive but not bad. Love fishing down there and staying in the park. There is inside lighting and wall power outlets as well. Closest towns are Roma, Zapata, and Rio Grande City. The shelters we always stayed in were not screened but fully enclosed.

Be sure to check out the hotel just outside the State Park. For a few dollars more youll have all the amenties. We have an outdoor kitchen, after a day of fishing throw something on the grill and enjoy a beverage while visiting with others.

Let me know if you have any questions.

How will the proposed government shutdown effect the state park and the border patrol?

No effect?
