I found it to be twin sister to Belton. Highland reservoir, deep/clear very little visible cover. Definitely a finesse and top water type of fishing. I wouldn't drive a long distance to fun fish it.

Bingo! And I live only 35 minutes from the lake. Canyon is....well, Canyon. Haha. If you hit the lake at the right time, in the right spot, you can catch a near 20 pound bag. But that is pretty rare. It's a very fickle lake, but it can be rather rewarding at times. There are definitely good fish in there! But they are few and far between. I'll put it this way, 12-13 pounds usually gets you a check in a tournament. I wouldn't recommend it as a destination lake, even though it does have a little bit of scenery. Spring is the best time to fish it. PM me if you wanna talk more about it.

Since you asked “what others think”... I hate it, hardest dang lake there is to catch a fish at.

Canyon can be a very difficult lake! Side Note: It also has some BIG bass!

If you were to pick the best lake in that area for numbers of fish. What lake would it be?

I forgot to mention, the river part can be good at times. It usually fishes pretty well during the Spring. You just have to pick the best days you can, to go. You can flip or throw a crankbait and spinnerbait all day long.
If you want numbers, I would go to Lake Buchanan.

Be warned about the river though, you can lose a lower unit in about 1 minute of running in it.
