took my boat out Saturday and got on the water, have a 80 lb 24 volt motor guide. dropped the trolling motor in the water and nothing happened. Pulled it up and took the prop off to look for any type of bind and none was there. when I hit the switch I would get about a quarter turn and then nothing. Do you think it is the batteries. Have a noco three bank charger/maintainer that I charge the batteries with every time after being on the water. The lights indicated that the batteries were charged when I left for the lake. What do you think it is? With the recent cold snaps in DFW I thought it might be the batteries, but the noco showing a charge gave me pause on that. I imagine it is something electrical. Could it be a short or blown fuse just barely getting contact? Any thoughts on what I should do? Thanks in advance.

Had same issue, took TM in and they called hour later, " this thing works fine" I have a battery tender plug receptacle, negative wire had worked out of the boot, that was my problem. Also could check the fuse if you have one for the TM batteries to keep it from overheating. Push button one on mine.

The wire connections would be the first thing, then the battery connections. Then see if the trolling motor has had water intrusion.

Had one that did that ended up being the brushes wore out.

Just got my Motorguide out of the shop. In another story, it took 3 trips to get it fixed. It was brushes in the lower head.

I think you have a TM problem but......

1) Check all of your batteries. If all is good, go to Step 2.
2) I don't know how your system is set up. Unplug the male plug. Check the female side of your plug. Make sure you are getting 24 volts. If that checks out, go to Step 3.
3) Take apart your male plug and plug it into the female plug. Make sure your are getting 24 volts at the connections. I have had these plugs go bad in the past. If this checks out, go to Step 4.
4) Reassemble the male plug and plug it back into the female plug. My Motorguide is a hand-control that has an on/off switch under the top "head". That switch breaks the neutral side of your 24 volt current. It will generally have a black wire. Make sure this switch is on. If this is case for you, then take the cover off of the top head. Find the red wire coming from you male power plug. Take a sharp knife and put a small nick in your red and black wire. Take a voltmeter and see if you are getting 24 volts. If yes, then take your TM to your repair shop.

To some of the helpful posters: If he's getting a quarter turn of the TM when he energizes it, and then it stops.....the problem isn't a FUSE or BREAKER. A blown fuse or tripped breaker isn't going to let the motor shaft rotate 1/4 revolution on multiple occasions. It is likely to be either wiring connections, or the motor.

I would guess it is the brushes as well. I had a Minn Kota Maxxum that I could only turn it in one direction. Wouldn't go back the other way. Took it to All Star in and they cleaned the brushes and was as good as new.

all, thanks for the responses. I got a volt meter to check it out this evening and will let you know what I find out once I get back from my trip to Mexico. Hope to get on some rooster fish while vacationing with the wife in Puerto Vallarta. One question, if it is the brushes, would the prop freely turn in both directions by hand. I was able to do this without any resistance to speak of. I'm thinking it might be the batteries just hitting the end of their life cycle as it seemed very similar to a car battery clicking when you turn the ignition. like enough for a spark but not enough to turn over. Any ways we will see. Might have to use this as leverage for getting an Ultrex.

The answer is yes. You can manually turn it any way you want, but if you try and do it via the foot pedal, it won't turn. The reason I had taken mine in to get looked at was after a little while of this happening, I replaced all my batteries. So when it started happening with brand new batteries, I knew I had a problem other than lack of juice.

Bring it to me with a receipt and I'll get it taken care of.

Motor Guide has a high speed bypass. IF you have that on the front of the pedal, then check it in all positions. My problem was the control board IN the lower motor. I don't think it is your batteries. If it was low "juice" then it would turn slower. It could be worn brushes and rotate until the brush didn't make the next "connection" point.
