Hopefully it wont happen but there is a good chance it will happen. Threadfin start dying at 42 Water temps...of course thats not surface temps...thats actual water temps at depth. The deeper lakes will do better than the shallow ones. For example...Twok is hovering around 44 surface temps. This blast of cold air should put us 39- 41 Surface temps. Depending on how quick the cold surface temps fall through the water column will determine if we have a kill or not!

If it happens, I know where I am headed Thursday...

If there is a kill, How long does that mess up the bite?

If there is a kill, How long does that mess up the bite? Back in the winter of 2014 2015 the bite suffered about two weeks. It was drastic They went from biting one day to hardly being able to catch a fish the next several.

The bite may suffer, but some freaking toads will be caught. Some fish will be carring an extra 10 to 15lbs

Capt Littlejohn, when there is a shad kill, are there visible signs? Shad floating or do they sink? Wasn't there a shad kill a few yrs back on Twak and Texoma? Thought I remember the guides talking about water temps on Texoma about 38 degrees for several days.

He will answer and the catfishing was awesome right after that kill. The spot we fished had just a few floaters, but dead shad were up and down the water column

My experience with shad kills on Twok were the winters of 08,10,14...
Very little signs of shad on surface on main lake. But, the day before the kill there were mountains of bait from bottom of lake up 10-20ft...that would go on for a mile or more. After the kill, the entire south end of the lake was void of shad except for in a few pits, deep holes and river bends.
After the kill Fishing was slow generally. But, in all cases a few weeks after kill Fishing picked back up and the bite was fantastic. 14 is when the Lake Record was caught.

we deal with them in Arkansas almost every year same story when it 1st happens hang on to your rods then the bottom of the lake is covered with cold dead shad and they wont eat for weeks...especially if there is no water coning in and going out of the lake
If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....

08 was the year we fished, between the "little bridge" and the center of the two points west, it was game on for two days.

Water was at 41 and unfortunately we had a pretty significant kill. We saw 34 inch threadfin shad floating all over the lake today Opened up a eater we caught today and this came bulging out...Talk about a vacuum cleaner! Lol That was out of one Fish. All threadfin. I think those were all dead and on the bottom...he was having a handout!

That pic makes you wonder how much a 60#er can shove in her stomach before they quit eating.
