I've always wanted to really learn to rope. I played around years back when I had horses, but that was a long time ago. I can swing a rope a little, but not very good. I plan to start practicing on the ground. Been looking on the net for places to get lessons etc.
I've read Cowboy church is a good place to start if you want to learn to rope.
I plan to get out of the burbs and back out in the country on of these days. Build a barn etc.
Comments please.
Thanks, Billy

It's more expensive than bass fishing.

It's more expensive than bass fishing. Understatement of the year. FL70 and a Bloomer are required.
God loves you just as much as anybody else!!

It's more expensive than bass fishing. I'll let my wife find out slowly!!!, instead of coming out and telling her I can't rope worth a dang and plan on buying 15k heading horse that I don't have a place to keep it and that's a cheap one.
Thanks, Billy

Ground work is ESSENTIAL! Don't even worry about getting on a horse until your catch rate on the ground is consistently above 90%. Get the right type of rope. My choice is either Cactus or Fastback. You can pick up a very good head horse for around 5-6K these days. Team Roping has exploded over the past few years. So a lot of good videos on YouTube. They do have a lot of schools. Most you can rent a horse. That is personally where I would start once I started catching consistently.

I plan to order a Fastback Cobra rope and a dummy today. I banged around on the net last night and found a few places not to far from me that looks like they give lessons.
Thanks, Billy

It has turned into a rich mans sport. Go to a high school rodeo, you would be amazed how many 17 year old boys and girls are pulling a 50k horse in an 80k trailer with a brand new 65k truck. And that's just the start, they have either an outdoor or indoor arena (or both) on their property with about 20 roping steers that they replace, often, as soon as they get too big or get roped out. And they have back-up horses lol. And they are soooo good now. You have 15 year old kids making 4 and 5 second runs. It's a blast to watch. The old roping movies make it look like a good ole boy sport, nowadays you have to have a big bankroll to even compete in a local jackpot.

Sounds kinda like High School fishing, Bass Club Tournaments.
Thanks, Billy
