First time to use mine this year. Spent the last 48 hours trying to determine what was wrong with damper not opening or shutting correctly. So uncomfortable trying to work on that mess all twisted around while sitting on edge of bricks while looking up while trying to shine light and move things around. Finally got it back in track and making up for lost time. First fireplace I've had in 30 years.

Looks good Lewis!
I've got a gas fireplace and last time I lit it I burned off my eyebrows so I kind of refrain now

Get the long wooden matches light it and get it in place around the gas log then slowly turn the key increasing the gas until it ignites. I strongly emphasize the word slowly

have had this house for 12 years and never used the fireplace. It's half on an internal (to garage) wall and I don't trust those.

I've got a gas fireplace and last time I lit it I burned off my eyebrows so I kind of refrain now Thanks for reminding me of burning hair. On my birthday about 40 years ago I got into a motorcycle accident at college. Got out of emergency room later that evening, got home and was about to light gas stove to cook when I heard about my accident on 10 oclock news on TV. I leaned away from stove with gas lit and match burning to see around corner to tv. When I turned back around gas had been running a little longer and match was now closer... BOOM. I pounded my head like a madman trying to put out the flames in my hair. Thought I might make the 10 o'clock morning news but got it put out.

I made the mistake of turning on the gas first, droped the match picked it up and quickly considered if there was too much gas or not to still put it down toward the gas... I guessed wrong. Burned off my eyebrows and my boss was calling me Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for the next two weeks.

When I was a kid I poured gas on the logs in my dads fireplace while they were gone. When I lit it the explosion blew everything off the walls and the ashes that were already in the fireplace went everywhere. It was quite a traumatic event for me. Lesson learned, dont use gasoline to start a fire inside of a house.
