Today a young boy, 16, came to my residence in Hitchcock, bringing his potential Tx Freshwater Body Record Buffalo. Yours truly operates a TPWD Official Weigh Station. The freshwater Buffalo weighed in at 37.57#, 34 1/4" long, and a Girth of 29". The youngster's name is Colton Carner of Santa Fe. The Diversionary Canal north of Hwy 2004 is considered Freshwater and requires a Freshwater License if your 17 and over. I wish him luck with his possible Record fish. Last year he got the record for a Spotted Gar.
While he was here, he was telling me that the Canal was hot with Specks...mostly in the 20" bracket. Colton told me he was throwing Down South Lures..Mullet colored jigs, along with Orange (ish) colored Corkies.I was a bit curious to know how the trout taste being caught that far inland in brackish water and he said they taste just like saltwater Freckle Fish ought to taste!! I better get my gear together and try the Canal area by the 2d Street Public Boat Ramp. I may get lucky and catch me some supper. Stay safe and remember to Take a Kid Fishin'
