I went out to the spillway this morning. I was talking to a fellow. He told me that when they had the big flood in 1992 that the fishing was incredible below the dam for a long time. Also, he told me that big stripers had moved up from the river and they were catching some in the 15 lb. range. I suspect that striper that Jacob caught probably came up from the Brazos River.

Well J-Moe, did you catch anything this morning? How about others that were there?

Well J-Moe, did you catch anything this morning? How about others that were there? We tried fishing in the spillway for about 30 minutes and caught nothing so we headed over and fished for bluegill.

The Lake Somerville dam spillway continues to be tough fishing even in the early morning hours despite a dozen or so fishermen along with J-Moe and I who keep trying our luck. I know the drill by heart now so when the hybrids and whitebass no-show in the tailrace we just jump over to the lake side and fish for sunnies. J-Moe and I both are working on tying up a good cricket fly imitation and getting close to having something that will actually stick a few of the many attempts by the feisty bluegills.

Another fine day. 75 yards down from the spillway chute & in the shade. The 3 big ones on top are near 18". Roadrunners in white or green or 3" silver or green swimming shad baits.

FishTales: Independence Day the 4th of July Got up extra early on the Monday holiday to catch a few fish before our 4th of July lunch celebration. I was surprised to find that only one other fisherman was fishing the hot spot in the spillway. The boys were on their way but before arriving I found the fish "on the fly". Over the course of the morning we caught several nice whitebass, goo, crappie and a couple of hybrids. The freedom to do this in a safe and secure country is what the holiday means to me..

The 4th of July went so well that J-Moe and I returned to the spillway on the 5th to do it again "on the fly"! The morning was pretty much a repeat of the morning before with us finding several whitebass willing to take our offerings. J-Moe put on a show this time as I had trouble hooking up as often as he did on his fly the "magical clouser" .. The hybrid stripers were a no show this trip to the spillway but we are always looking to pick a fight with the bruiser of the bass world be it "on the fly" or any other way!

Our morning run to the dam didn't quite meet the fishy expectations we had for the day. I suspect we needed more time as the whitebass seem to be feeding later in the morning as the moon goes dark. Once again J-Moe out-fished me on the whitebass but we were pretty even on the number of fish overall for the two hours we flung the fly. I don't believe this was the morning to test the newest flys so another trip is in order to complete my research! >>))) ;>

You are welcome.. it is sharing a part of my life that adds value to the company in unexpected ways .. and the whitebass fishing in the spillway turned off again.. J-Moe and I fought the heat Thursday evening but never found the whites.. only gar and goo for the most part.. That is tougher fishing in the evening.. not sure when we might try again.. been looking at the Brazos up at Whitney waiting for the lake to come down so we can fish the river down below.. it should be stupid good bass fishing for a while..

Good afternoon fellow fishermen!
I went out to the dam this morning and had an... interesting morning. I was the first one there, got there about 5:45am.
Started out throwing some yellow curly tails and caught 2 gar, one white bass, and one catfish (foul hooked).
Switched to a white roostertail and caught 2 white bass in probably 5-6 casts, then lost it in the fence monster...
Switched to a yellow roostertail and hung it on something and lost it on first or second cast...
Switched to a chrome and white meps inline spinner and caught a 12lb buffalo on the first cast, then lost it on the second cast...
Switched back to the curly tails and caught three goo, one gar, and foul hooked three buffalo.
Left at 7:45am.
I was fishing on the far side, fishing mainly the backwash area where J-Moe and HLS tend to fish.
There were several people that must have been interested in what kind of deodorant i was wearing, as they kept getting closer and closer with every fish i caught. Literally moved to each side of me at one point.
There were some guys further down on the same side that were launching large sassy shad type swimming baits far out and slowly bringing them back. They seemed to hang up LOTS, but did caught a handful of large hybrids. I saw them pull at least three out, could have caught more, but there were maybe 5-6 of them fishing. I'm sure they caught more, but they did a good job of hiding it when they caught it.
The two guys that were surrounding me never caught a fish until i left, and as i walked away, I saw one catch a goo or white bass, couldn't be for sure from the stairway back up to the parking lot.
Enjoyable morning, made some new friends- they didn't speak English, but they now know the smell of my underarm deodorant, and caught some fish.
I've been thinking about running up to Lake Livingston and fishing below the dam... from Katy it would take about 20-30mins longer than going to Somerville, but i hear that the release is ideal for wade fishing now... anyone here ever done that at Livingston?

Thanks for the report. Sounds like a fine morning of combat fishing. Throw a fly rod. They won't get so close, LOL!!!
