Looking at two different flipping sticks, the falcon lowrider 20 6'10" heavy has a weight suggestion of 1/4 to 3/4. The falcon Jason Christie 6'11" heavy has a rating of 1/2 to 1 1/2. I rarely tie on anything heavier than 1/4 oz bullet weight, but I am wondering does the rod recommended weights have to be taken into serious consideration? Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert - sure one will come along though - but I think it matters quite a bit for casting, in theory, but the problem is the accuracy and comparability of those ratings across mfrs and actual rod models.

Probably matters quite a bit less in flipping since you don't really load the rod the same way.

Flip a 1-1/2oz tungsten pegged weight with 65lb braid into heavy veggies and you'll want the rod rated for the most weight. Flip a 3/8 jig in and around docks and you don't want the heavy rod.

Flipping isn't always a one style thing. Or one bait....or one weight.

The weight rating of a rod is a combination of the backbone of the rod and the tip. It takes a lot of tip to load up a heavy weight and a lot of back to balance a heavy tip.

it matters a lot, if you try to flip/pitch a weight that's too heavy for the rod, it will be unmanageable because the tip will be bent too much just from the weight. conversely if you try to pitch with too light of a weight, you won't "load" the tip enough to get feel / distance with your lure. pick a rod that's going to load right regardless of the type of cast and it will work better for ya.

Thanks Ted! Sounds like I need to stick to the lighter weight recommended rods

I work with a guy like you. His first name is Cesar (pronounced say sar). I can't even begin to say his last name. The guy owns a screw driver that he grinds into whatever shape he needs at the time. It's all he owns. And his work reflects his commitment to his career via his tool choices. Haha.

If you never tie on anything over 1/4....you really only need something MH around 7 ft. to 7'3"
