Have any of you used braid with shallow running crank baits?

Braid mainline (Power pro super slick) to 6ft copoly leader. Lipless and cranks.

I like it. Long casts, the super slick is quieter than regular PP, improved sensitivity of the braid, with some forgiveness with the copoly leader.

The only time I would ever use braid for shallow cranking is if I wanna keep it above submerged grass. It works well with lipless crankbaits too.

Use it for ripping traps out of the grass. Otherwise, I use fluorocarbon

Not at all. I just tie the braid straight to the bait with a palomar and give it an overhand before clipping the tag so there's no chance it will slip through.

I use straight braid on my deep cranks. Ive noticed no difference in the amount of bites, loose far less lures, and get to max depths easily.

I should put it on my shallow stuff also, I just haven't yet.

I use 30-40lb braid a lot with shallow cranks. I back my drag off just a hair and use the crankbait rods so they give and don't rip the hooks out. Plus it is nice I will admit when hung way back in a stump I can just pull really hard and the hook will straighten!

David Fritts said that's what he does. Said he thought there wasn't much reason not to. He said he would consider using Fluoro but he thought slinging it all day as well as retrieving (against the pressure of the bait) would stretch the fluoro out and he did not think it was as reliable after a several hours of fishing hard. Probably doesn't matter on the fluoro because most folks probably still have plenty of break strength to handle the fish they are catching.

I use 30LB power pro main line with a 3-4ft mono leader. For leader material I use 12-15lb big game. I join the two lines with a LOCKED FG knot or a blood knot. Especially when I using a rod with micro guides, Micro guides really put a beating on joining knots when your reeling the knot through the guides all day long. Hope this helps! smile

Do you notice a loss in casting distance with the knot going out through the guides?
Do you seal your knots with something like this?
