How “warm” does it need to be before you guys aged 55 and older go fishing in winter? I used to fish when ice formed on my rod guides, but now I wait for it to reach about 50 degrees before I venture out.

I am not as anxious to go as I used to, but will still brave the elements with a determined friend.

Lose my wife at 60° and below!

I'm like ACAM not as mad at them as I use to be and my wife won't go until it's postcard weather.

Thanks for the reply stratus caster. Every since I retired, I just wait for a mild day between cold fronts. Very few weeks go by in central Texas that I can’t go. Glad I live in Texas and am retired!

Well several factors come into play here,..I wont fish if it's 60 with an north wind at 15-20 and cloudy/spitting rain.
I will fish at 50 with a big sun and no wind,..depends on the comfort factor...I don't like to be cold and fighting the elements, I don't mind a little cold if the elements aren't a factor... cool

I'm still many moons away from my 50s, but the human body can endure a lot if the fish are biting smile

I fished Fri and Sat. Have plenty of good warm weather gear to stay warm. However, that was about my limit. Only time I will fish if it's colder/spitting rain is maybe a tournament and that can be questionable. Once you retire, there are a lot more good days to fish instead of fighting the elements.

And since it's getting winter for sure, be more careful and move slower in the boat. Falling out of the boat in 50 degree water can be deadly really quick. Lots of clothes don't make me very nimble. Plan on how you will get back in the boat before you fall out. Multiple layers of wet clothes are very heavy. Standing on the cavitation plate and using the trim switch works fairly well to raise the body to deck level. Boarding ladders that are built in the jack plate or on the transom are hard to use with a lot of clothes on.

+1 Jim Sr.

Very good advice Ken Gaby. I’ve owned several boats over the years, but sold my last “real boat” a few years ago because I wasn’t using it, was fishing with a younger guy that has a 20 foot Skeeter. On my boats, I always tied a loop of rope to a cleat on each side that I could pull over the side and use as a stirup to put a foot in and swing my other leg over the side to get back in. This will get you in, but you have to make the length of the rope/stirup just right so you can get a foot into it and lift yourself up.

71 years young and went twice last week 42 and 46 degrees, and plan on, per weather reports, to go again starting Wednesday. I watch wind more than temps. Dress for temp, get boat with sides, bay type or Lowe’s type, so you have less of a chance of stumbling overboard, ALWAYS wear auto inflate vest and get out there.

God did not give me the opportunity to live on a beautiful Crappie filled lake to sit indoors and look at it. Be safe/cautious/sensible and in the event I go by drowning while fishing it was meant to be!

Finaddict, sounds like you have the right name (grin). Wish I lived next door. Might be tempted to buy warmer clothing and join you. Well, probably not. Got quite a few years on you.

All about the bite and wind/precipitation. Actual temperature isn't the determining factor.

I've fished all the days with ice on the water that I want to for a lifetime. Sunshine, light wind and 50° or it can wait for another day.
