When trying to pick a spot for deadsticking, besides presence of bait, what do you look for in the terrain of the lake? I know fish will be in deepwater, lets say 50ft. Do I anchor the boat in creek beds that is 50 feet deep or on top of ledges that is in 50 feet of water or on slopes that is in 50 feet of water? I have tried deadsticking couple of times recently and only 3 sandbass to show for it. Thanks.

I normally don't fish until I mark bait and fish or that I am confident enough to know that fish will be in the area. Then I normally use the trolling motor to work the flukes really slow. I Don't anchor very often unless it's with spot lock. If you mark fish then you can also try drifting through them but if the winds are high then a wind sock would be nice to have. Try looking around the main river channel. They may be suspended in the middle of the channel or legde of the river channel. They could also be in open deep flats. You can also find em up the rivers in deep holes now that this cold weather has arrived

Creek beds, flats close to River channel if present, trees close to river channel. We don't know what lake u fish, therefore, a lot of info will be missing as related to structure .
Shoot a PM to me and I will gladly create an abstract pattern that u can fine tune with time on the water.

I agree with Diesel. I idle around my areas I fish until I mark fish. Then I set up as slow of a drift I can with thumper on calling in the fish. Watch your depth and try to keep your lure in the fish zone.

I disagree with the "fish will be deeper" assertion. Most of my deadsticking success comes in less than 35 FOW and sometimes then the fish will be suspended at 20-25 FOW. I prefer to drift and from my experience wind is pretty important. I like a drift in the .4 or .5 mph range and I will use a drift sock when necessary to slow down.

Oh when I say anchor, I mean spot lock. Ive tried drifting and spot locking on top of river channels and on top of ledges along river channels. I must be picking the wrong spots.

Find the bait , find the fish. The fish, stripers, sandies and hybrids are fattening up in order to spawn. Not all spawn, however, the instinct is there to fatten up.
