Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak

Brian McCaffrey, Taylor Cherry and Sam Hunter, along with friends, down from Boise and Chicago chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

We started out the afternoon catching bait at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale in 120 ft. of water, 1.8 miles from shore. The target bait fish are called Bullet Bonitos, and we use a small jig feather attached to a down rigger to catch them. With each pass by the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, we caught 1 -2 baits, and stayed there until we caught a total of 10 Bullets.

Next, we got out wire leaders with multiple hooks and put the live baits back into the water we spread out the baits - one on the center rigger, two out of the right and left riggers and one deep on the down rigger ball. I started heading north of Fort Lauderdale, slowly trolling the baits along the reef line from 100 feet of water out to 300 feet of water. The first bite we got was a large Kingfish; he ate the bait and took out some drag, jumped out of the water, shaking his head, and spit the hooks.

We reset and went back to fishing - the same thing happened a second time a big bite on the rigger line, the large 30 pound Smoker Kingfish ran off drag, skyrocketed out of the water and spit the hooks. Very frustrating, but we kept on fishing and went back in 150 ft. of water. The right rigger line started bouncing erratically, a good indication that a predator was nearby. All of a sudden a giant splash, as a Sailfish is chasing the Bullet Bonita in circles. The Sailfish fed on the bait and starts ripping out drag hooked up. Brian was the angler, and he jumped into the fighting chair to do battle. The Sailfish continued to peel out drag. After some time fighting the Sailfish, both Taylor and Sam took turns fighting the Sailfish. This fish was extremely acrobatic, jumping out of the water, doing 360s, and making big runs. After a long battle, we got the Sailfish along the side of the boat, removed the hooks and pulled the Sailfish in for a quick photo. Afterwards, we released the Sailfish to be caught another day. Congratulations, guys, on a job well done.

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
