Ok guys, finally sold our suburban and I’m in need of a truck. I gotta buy used and 2014 is about the newest year model I can comfortably afford and mileage is around 60-90k in my price range.
Toyota Tundra crewmax 5.7 is not out of the question, I just haven’t found one configured how I want it.
My only have to have is 4x4, biggest available V-8 (Ecoboost is not an option in my book, don’t try). Not buying another Chevy so that leaves me with the Ram 1500 Hemi (crew cab) and the F-150 5.0. I have driven both but still can’t decide. My concern with buying a higher mileage truck is the transmission and the remaining longevity of the engine. The Ram also was a little soft in the rear but I can cure that with stiffer coils. Which one would you buy and why?

Hardly ever see a Hemi with issues. 5.0 is one of the best engines in the Ford lineup reliability-wise. Toyota 5.7 is also a very good motor. I'd find the one of those I could get the best deal on and go with it.

I have enjoyed my 5.0. Seems to be a well proven engine. I think Ford's overall quality is better.

Bought me a 14’ Ford F150 back in june . Had 93,000 on it and a one owner . Well taken care of , very clean . Not a 4wd tho . So far i been well pleased with it but i have not pulled any trailers yet but if i do i doubt I’d have any trouble doing so . I would not pull a 5th wheel with it tho .

I have owned both, The 5.0 is a great motor in the F-150 but the 6 speed transmission kills your fuel economy when not towing. Currently I drive a 14 Ram 1500 and do much better then the f150 when it comes to fuel economy with the cylinder deactivation and the 8 speed. Also to me the ram seats are more comfortable. Both tow equally well.

Have been in late model fords and have a late model ram, but the ram has the ecodiesel and the fords had the ecoboost. Think both are nice trucks and I think the v-8's both offer are pretty solid. The ram 8-speed is a nice transmission and I think I would lean to the ram for a little more grunt and a little more displacement which arguably gets better fuel mileage. But no flys on the ford, I like the ones I have ridden in.

I bought a Tundra Crew Max 4x4 with the 5.7. $42 000. It's a 2016. Great truck and pulls a boat without a sweat. Awesome brakes. Poor gas mileage. Average without the boat is 12.9 .....pulling the boat it averages around 11.5.

But, hey! It's fast and rides nice.

You talk about rear ends and I think it's worth mentioning that the Ford rear suspension might be the worst of the big-name players in half-tons. Ram has the best ride. Toyota seems to squat the least. Chevy is a nice combination of ride and capability. Ford isn't particularly good at any of it when compared to the rest.

Stick air bags on the Ram and you have good ride and no squat under load. Win-win.

I also agree that the Ram 8-speed is a fantastic transmission.

So Ford's rear suspension is so bad, yet they dominate payload ratings? Hmmm.....

I'm not a major fan of the coil rear suspension, but I would take that write up with a grain or two of salt

I just posted for payload ratings...which you can definitely take with a grain of salt. I'm not against coils. I have not been in a 1500 but they do work good on the 2500. I think there is more to the equation. Heck, a passenger tire with 35psi will ride a lot softer than a e-rated tire with 60psi, regardless of the truck.

To me that looks like a marketing ploy by ford. They have the most payload because the have a heavy payload option and they have the lightest truck. I believe most of the others are cut short on their max trailer weight at least for 5th wheel by the pin weight. 20% pin weight is ok but so is 15%. If you use 15% it will up the others tow ratings a bit I bet and ford will run out of GC weight and will significantly tighten the field. Also if you look at gross axle weight ratings of all the big names you get some funny ideas about why things are the way they are.

The reason the ford says it can tow more conventional/bumper tow than 5th wheel is because they probably recommend 10% tongue weight for that.

That said I do think the ecoboost is by far the most capable power plant in any of the 1/2 ton market from a get up and go standpoint. Ive towed about 7,000 lbs with my RAM and it does it like a champ and with proper weight distribution handles incredibly well, but I wouldn't want to get into the 10k territory with it for even occasional use.

Max payload is whatever weight it takes to get to your gvwr class. Because Ford lightened their trucks with aluminum, they have a distinct advantage.

Point was they only have said distinct advantage if you artificially require higher pin/tongue weights than necessary. You do not have to have a pin weight of 20% to safely operate a gooseneck/5th wheel. The numbers make it look like ford is such a big winner because they are using 20% if you use 15% then then ford hits its gross combination and cant go up but the others have room to grow quite a bit because the limiting factor beforehand was payload.

I guess we are a little off topic now debating max 5th wheel tow ratings for what the OP asked though. I think they are all pretty decent trucks, but I don't know if I will ever stick to his stipulations of v-8 again in a 1/2 ton pickup.

I like Fords and drive an F150 but I know a dealership that told me the F150 is not good for 5th Wheel trailers . They told me best is 3/4 ton or full ton for 5th Wheels . That's why I said I would not pull a 5th wheel . Also 5th wheels are bigger trailers and I don't care for a short body anything in 1/2 ton weight for a 5th wheel even if it's 4WD .

I average a little over 17 on summer gas and mid 16's on winter blend on hwy. 10 towing boat but I have 22' bay on tandem axle that weighs 5000 lbs. I thought towing mileage would be higher than my Tacoma but it is not. If I was the OP and buying used I would definitely look for a Tundra. Not sure if the 38 gallon tank was available in a 2014. Bigger gas tank is main reason I sold Tacoma and bought Tundra. Tacoma would only go 180-190 miles towing.

I honestly don't know much about the engineering aspects of the suspension differences. I've ridden in Fords and didn't think they had particularly good rides compared to Chevy or Ram. And the guy who bought my parents' old travel trailer had an F-150 and it squatted so low that the base of the jack was just barely off the ground when we retracted it all the way. I'd never seen anything like it.

My point is that I don't have a ton of experiences with Ford suspensions, but the experiences I've had were all bad.

And that was with a 21', 4k lbs TT. Nothing heavy at all. It was made so that mid-size SUVs could pull it, and the F-150 looked pretty over-matched.

4k dry is probably pushing 6k loaded. If they didn't use a proper weight distribution hitch, it would squat any half ton.

I would say look at 2000 lbs of something and then tell me you put that in there. 2000 lbs is a 6-foot pickup bed stacked side to side top to bottom front to back with feed sacks. You putting bricks in there?

500 lbs on mine with just fresh water and propane. 21' x 8' is a little bigger than a pickup bed. It's easy to add a lot of weight.

That sticker also doesn't always include add-ons. I know mine doesn't include the second a/c or swivel chair. It probably doesn't even include the spare tire.

Most dealers tell you to allow 1500. Depending how you pack, could be more could be less. 2k is not hard. Mine is rated up to 3k lbs of cargo btw.

Electrical cords, water hoses, sewer hoses, camp mats, multiple chairs, table, decorations, lantern, outdoor games fishing gear, wheel chocks, wdh, sway bar, leveling supplies, vacuum, broom, linens +spares for 3 beds, clothes, tool kits, wheel tool, flashlights, iron, board games, hand guns, extra ammo, misc ( glue batteries, nuts bolts), air compressor, toilet chems, cleaners, tissue, hair dryer, toiletries (and everybody has to have their own) 2 TVs, play station, movies, space heaters, fan, books, dog food, dog crates(2), charcoal, bottled water, cokes, other drinks (lots of beer wink ), food, paper goods, spices, kitchen cleaner, Dawn, utensils, all my grilling gear, kitchen towels, bowls, pans, toaster, trash can/bags, interior decor...and thats just off the top of my head.

I was selling the unit for my parents. It was dead empty. Tongue weight was 450 lbs. I hauled it home with my 2004 Silverado and it didn't squat nearly that much.

Well I got a good deal on a 2013 F-150 4x4 5.0. Love the ride and the way it drives, which is all that matters. Couldn’t find myself a Tundra with the seating I wanted at the price I wanted. They are great trucks but just not for me. I’m really digging my new truck. Pics up when I get home....

I have had a 2012 F150 with the 5.0 and it pulled the boat like a dream, I would still be driving it except for the woman that T-boned me and totaled it. I looked at my options and bought a 2016 F150 with an ecoboost. It pulls my 21 foot boat like it is not there and gets up to 23 mpg on the road. I did add Timbren overloads to it as the rear end is mushy. As soon as I can I am replacing the tires with Michelins, the Hankooks suck.

I missed page 2, nice looking ride!!!

I will find out this weekend or next about towing the boat. The 5.0 runs so good, I can’t imagine the boat will work the truck out at all!

It'll handle it just fine. The first hauling trip I took in my 2015 was to Grand Lake in Oklahoma. The 5.0 handled my TR186 with out any issues at all. Going north got 17.5mpg with tail wind and coming back 16.5mpg in head wind. I'm satisfied.
