How much line do you typically let out when trolling and what type of line?
We are letting out about 40 yards of line or two sips of beer and an "Oh [censored]! I almost let all my line out." as Scott does it. We are fishing 19-20 foot of water and you have to bang the bottom to get results. I know, I know, "That's what she said." as Scott puts it. We troll at 4mph which is fairly fast. When your lure is bumping bottom you are doing it right. I know, I know... I use 15lb big game to troll and it has been broken. We jig with 40lb test, believe it or not. Having a 10-15lb Fort Phantom hybrid slam a jig at 18-12 feet will nearly break your arm and will break your line. It's all the same when we fish off the jet skis.

Tim, I must be all backwards. I use those same lb line only I troll with 40 lb and jig with 17 lb. I set the drag loose on the jigging reels though. I have started using braids with a flouro leader more lately for jigging. Maybe I’m doing it wrong since you’re the one catching all the hybrids. Lol
Use large billed crankbaits and fish a lake that is relatively clear on bottom. Or use crankbaits that only go a certain depth and don’t fish water any shallower. Set your drag to allow you time to get stopped and go back and work the lure loose if possible.
