I been playing around with some old hoof rasps and old files and old lawnmower blades seeing what I could make. Very quickly discovered that it ain't all that easy especially if you don't have the proper tools and equipment.
Free handing this stuff is all I can do and maybe one day I will have a forge and good belt grinder.
Here's a sample of what I have made so far this last month.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Wow. Those are freaking amazing for freehand! If you did not tell me, I would have thought you forged and ground them on a grinder.

I like the patterns on the blade and in the metal between the wood. The leather holders look great too!

Those would make amazing Christmas gifts. I bet any outdoorsman would love them.

Wow those look good I'd carry one! You sell them?

Speak up, you say this is your safety? Well, this is my boot, son, and it will fit up your ass with the proper amount of force!

Are you heat treating the blades? The hunting forum has a whole thread devoted to knives.

Just tempering in the oven to bring the edge to martensite and soften to around RC60. These good hoof rasps make a scary sharp blade when all goes well.

There used to be a poster here who went by Kev who started making knives as a hobby and I believe it grew into a fulltime job. I suspect some older posters here may know whether he has a website. I believe he had become fascinated with making his own Damascus steel for his knives.

How about a simple steak knife just for grins. No steak anywhere too tough for this blade.

I tried a few a while back out of old files and mower blades, didn't look that good though!!! Just on the bench grinder with no guards...

Thinking about getting one of those blanks online and making a handle for it, wanting a real nice kitchen knife 7" or so blade.

Angle grinder, bench grinder with buffing wheels, Porter Cable 4x36 belt sander and a Work Sharp is all I have. Sure would be nice to have a forge and anvil and 2x72 belt grinder for knife making. Some day maybe.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

Next up will be a single bevel straight edge Seax style with extra long handle. For slicing and dicing veggies. Just hope I can harden it to around RC 62-63 without cracking or warping. Might use burl black walnut for handle.

Got a couple of Saex's done. One with Cocobolo wood handle and one with burl black walnut. Really like the black walnut burl figure. These gonna be X-mas presents for somebody's kitchen. Slicing and dicing should last a lifetime.
