So I recently bought my first bass boat, a life long dream of mine. After a couple of months and a previous owners lost title, I finally have the boat registered and in my name. Now I need to get my boat trailer registered, the existing license plate is long expired. Would I get that at the DMV or the county tax office for that? And what all do I need? I've had a hard time getting any of this information and would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

Take the license plate and bill of sale for the trailer listing: trailer make, model, year, number of axels, gross curb weight, and VIN to your local Tax Assessor's office. You'll pay sales and use tax on the price of the trailer. Then they will get you squared away for registration: new plates will probably be issued.

County tax office to register the trailer. Depending on the county (I live in Denton County) I went to their website and printed the form a 145-U or something along those lines. BEWARE when putting the weights of trailer and boat and depending on who you talk to and what mood they're in. They might make you go weigh the trailer at a certified scale and get a weight ticket. Oh you will have to get it inspected too. Hope this helps good luck!!

Before you go to which ever tax office I would call them and get the info from them as far as the trailer is concerned. Don't think you need an inspection unless the GVW is over 4400 lbs. but I would ask that question also. You will probably be going to the Collin County office.

They have increased the trailer inspection requirement to around 7500 lbs.

Don't let them make you try to get you trailer inspected. They tried to do that with my ZX200 trailer..

They'll probably charge you late fee also unless you get lucky. I can't remember the exact date but think you have 30 days from the date on the bill of sale to register it.

I recently sold a 5th wheel for just under $60,000 and the guy waited to register it. They fined him 10% for not doing it within the allowed time frame. He tried to get me to make out another bill of sale changing the date, I told him no way. I got charged a late fee on my new boat last December, there was a mess up with where the paperwork was sent. I still got charge a late fee.

I drew up a picture of trailer I made, listed how much weight it would hold, took to county tax assessor paid $55 got my home made trailer plates.
