Hey everybody!

Brand new to TFF and excited for all of the new content! I'm an avid angler and can't wait to hit the water! Thanks for letting me be a part of this and forgive me if I'm doing things wrong! I'll try and correct it!

Anybody in the DFW/East TX area willing to point me in a good direction for some good fishing? (I'm also more than willing to drive for great fishing!)I'll mostly be wading, although I do have access to a small boat. I'm not picky when it comes to fishing and have quite a few single hand, switch, and spey rods in the arsenal and am fairly proficient with 'em all. I've heard alligator gar can be pretty epic on the fly? I also love me some Carp action! What is everyone's favorite fish to target and where do y'all like to hit up?

Other folks may know better, but my impression after a couple seasons here is that winter is tough for fly anglers. Most of the fish are deep most of the time-- your best bet is probably the down at the coast.

Gar are largely a summer fish for fly anglers as well.

Fortunately it's not too long before the bass begin their spawning thing and move up shallow, then the white bass, striped bass, and hybrids all make their spawning runs into the creeks.There's stocked trout around here (plus the Guadalupe river near Austin, Blue River and Lower Mountain fork in OK), but if you're used to Idaho trout fishing ... well this ain't that. I'm not sure what the carp do in the winter here, someone else might know more?

If you have access to a small boat try one of the area lakes. Right now with most water temps in the 60 to 70's bass are shallow and backed into creeks. Just find a ramp or launch point where you don't have to cross big water. I fly fish from a bass boat and this is my favorite time of year.

You might do a search of the fly fishing forum and put in the word �stripers�. Looks like there are some areas near to DFW for walk in or small boat access.

Searching old posts can be pretty useful. Try different key words and date ranges.

Just about any fish it seems will take a fly. A forum search will bring up useful information on where, how and when.

There are a couple of active fly fishing clubs in East Texas. East Texas Fly Fishers in Longview and Lone Star Fly Fishers in Tyler. I'm a 'sometimes' member of the ETFF. I've never been to the Tyler club's meetings, but a good friend tells me it's a very active group. There is a list of upcoming activities on the ETFF website. One that's not listed on there is the annual club trip to the Little Red River near Heber Springs, AR in a couple of weeks.

There are some HUGE brown trout caught this time of year as they migrate to the upper shoals to spawn.

Welcome Tug. C'mon down to the coast and get salty. Redfish are on fire right now.

If you like trout, and like to catch on occasional wild trout, come up to the Lower Mountain Fork this winter. Wait for the stop logs to come out and the spillway release to be fixed. Winter fishing is pretty good up there if they get the faucet fixed.

and to the TFF!

As mentioned above the LMF river at Beavers Bend state park in Oklahoma is a good winter option for North Texas. Google the fly shop forum was tips and river status. They are having an informal trip of forum members there next weekend.

I used to haunt the Ft Hood/Killeen area south and of Waco. Pick you up a 2 wt if you don�t already have one and hit up any body of water and catch pan fish and bass till your hearts content. White bass are a lot of fun, and so are stripers as mentioned above.

I'm not a member of any club, but thinking about joining one. Always nice to share stories w fellow fly fishers.

Brazos River below Possum Kingdom and Whitney are loaded with a huge variety of fish but might be too far away.

Lake Fork is a must to fish March/April on the fly, but try to go during a week day.
