Made the first stocking of the 2017 Trout Stocking Program from the Texas Parks & Wildlife on the Guadalupe River. I arrived about an hour after the truck made it's drop. Fished from 11:15am till 2:00 p.m. and caught about 15 fish. Kept five for the frying pan. Ran into Will 1960 Texan and watched him catch a bunch. Gold Super Duper lures,Gold Panther Martin Lures, and Berkley Cheese Bait were used. Fish were holding at the ends of currents and next to shallow ledges. Also met my buddy Steve who limited out in 10 minutes using a gold Super Duper. A couple of nice Bluegill were also caught. Catching a limit of Rainbow Trout and meeting up with some good friends. It just don't get any better!

How much meat are on those trout they are stocking vs a 10" crappie? Thought about taking my daughter to one after they stock it.

I'd say comparable, maybe a little more meat on some of the better trout.

Thanks stretch,Reshelman, JigandJeep,Clayton,and Smurfs for the replies! Stretch: Three trout along with the sides fill me up! For their size they have some good meat on them. JigandJeep: Smurfs is right on the slow retrieve! I usually do a slow to medium retrieve.

Went to the local pond that was just stocked with trout and caught around 7-8. Most of them were only around 7-8"???? Is it common for this small of fish to be stocked? I figured we would get fish at least 12"? Now, I'm not complaining about catching some fish, it beats a skunk any day, just curious..

TPW stocks a lot of small trout in the 5 to 7 inch range. The trout used for the stockings come from Missouri and are shipped during the summer to the hatcheries in Texas. The smaller trout usually do not get the chance to grow any bigger. I usually throw the smaller ones back if they are not hooked badly and are in good condition before I release them. It seems to me the average length of the trout stocked by TPW are in the 9 to 10 range. I have caught a lot in the 11 to 12 inch range. It seems TPW stock the bigger fish later in the winter. Just my two cents.

Yeah I released all of the ones that we caught. It makes sense that bigger ones would get stocked later in the winter, as water temps get colder..thanks!

Denton stocking a few weeks ago - we had 4 in ~2hrs of active fishing day of stocking. 1 was just under 13' the other three averaged 9.5'ish

WOW how time flies. Great way to start the trout season. The season is almost halfway over and I have not seen any Granny D's post. What is up with that? Looks like a very cold start to the second half of the season. Does the colder weather play a factor in the bite on stocked trout?
