Is a drop shot the only effective way to fish a point, or pocket or creek channel or you name it when you�re surrounded by timber that�s both submerged and standing? It�s a bit over stimulating at times to see all of it and fish with efficiency when you�re a relative new comer.

A drop shot rigged with a 1/0 or 2/0 ewg hook and a 3/8oz drop shot weight works really well, but it isn't the only way to effectively fish an area with timber.

I sometimes like to hook up a flipp'n/pitch'n rig and will go up to the timber and bounce off it, around it, sometimes just straight drop it...you never know who might be holding up along the timber. For that setup I like to tie on a 4/0-5/0 ewg hook with a 1/2oz bullet weight that is pegged. I like putting a big tube, craw, or beaver style bait on that.

You also can't go wrong with a weightless worm/stick bait. Just put on a 4/0 ewg hook and work it through the area as you please...you can drag the bottom, hop it around, jerk it through the water, just whatever you feel comfortable with.

In the end, when you are fishing around timber, you are bound to get hung up...it is just some setups/lures will have a more or less likely chance of getting hung up :p

Trig comes through the best, superline hooks, other thick wire hooks, and flipping hooks work well (your preference). If the timber is thick, peg the weight. If it isn't thick, unpegging the weight can be more productive at times, but can get you in trouble if the weight is on one side of the branch with the hook on the other.

Structure jigs come through that kind of cover well; as do arkie style jigs, and most swim jigs.

Sled heads and Texas rigged swing heads will work.

Screw lock weighted baits can be great.

Heavy, compact spinnerbaits also.
