I have a spare reel (cheap) and would love to swing by academy or walmart and get a cheap heavy action rod and some braided line just to have a third setup temporarily for a jig. I find im spending a lot of wasted time tying on different baits.

Does anyone recommend one of the cheaper rods that will get the job done until I upgrade?

Is less than 35-40 doable?

Academy. The blue Ethos casting rod in heavy for $69. Its sold out online, but in store availability is usually good. Dont get the nano guides, the regular Ethos guides. I dont have this rod, but examined it in store many times. Its highly recommended by others here on TFF.

The Fenwick silver hawk II is in the online bargain cave for $49. They are at $49 for two of the MH models. I have the original Silver Hawk in MH and Id say its really a heavy power and throw braid on it no problem

Id get the fast action (not the extra fast) for jigs

If $40 is the ceiling, a one piece ugly Stik GX2 in MH will handle heavy braid and heavy jigs no problem, but you will hate it (arm fatigue and low sensitivity)

Thanks for the responses guys. Maybe this is opening another can of worms but do you use MH or H action rods for flipping jigs?

Heavy action for flipping jigs

H2o express for me, I prefer it over a lot of my higher end rods. Cork grips and light. I cant find any of the old HD models now, only micro. I hear you can get them in stores but not hear in Abilene but we are getting a new one soon!

If trying to narrow down to one rod I would go H to cover all your bases. If you go MH you won't be able to flip thick vegetation or heavy cover effectively.

It depends, are you going to "flip" or "pitch" jigs? For pitching I would go with the M/H and for flipping I would go with the H action rod.
