I’m a clinch knot user for tying my fly on, but what loop knot do you guys use for attaching flies to your leader/tippet?

Early on I decided that fishing would be my way of looking at the world. First it taught me to look at rivers. Lately is has been teaching me how to look at people, myself included.

I use a Rapala Loop. I use that with lures and jig head and it works for various streamers and crustacean patterns. I use a Davy knot for things like nymphs and flies that I only drift.

I use a clinch knot for all non-streamer patterns and the non-slip mono loop for streamers. It is quick and easy to tie and I have never had it fail on me.

I can't make the non-slip mono loop cinch down nicely, I'll keep working on it. I've also seen people using the perfection loop to tie their flies on so I'll try that as well. Rapala loop looks like the non-slip mono so maybe I can get that one to be nicer.

I have been using the Perfection loop, but this thread caused me to search its breaking strength, and it looks pretty bad. That search had me find the double surgeon's loop, and it is easy for me to tie...I twirl the loops with my right index, then push the fly through. Looks pretty good...thanks for the inspiration.

This took me a while to learn with the non-slip mono loop. Best trick I've used is to pull the non tag end to try and cinch things down a bit before pulling on the tag end to tighten the knot.

BTW, I stick with the non-slip mono loop for streamers, clinch for top water and dries, and davy knot for nymphs and small stuff.

Hope that helps.

Maybe you are already doing it but I lubricate my knots with saliva. I also do something you should not do and that's put the tag end in my teeth for a good cinch down. Something like a hemostat might be better. On the rapala knot, I try to make the loop as small as possible and not have a lot of tag end so I won't waste tippet. A small loop avoids having the loop get tangled on dumbbell eyes on patterns like a clouser.

I haven't had the knot bust, but I have lost fish when the loop failed. I think the fluorocarbon gets a little crease in it where the hook eye rests and weakens after being tested by the fish. I could be there's a nick in the line too. Fluorocarbon doesn't degrade in the sun, water or excessive heat like mono, but it does weaken after repeated stretching more than mono. I'm pretty lazy about changing flies and checking the knot, but it's probably a good idea to periodically re-tie after a few fights with fish.

I also use the mono loop/Rapala. I agree with the remark about making the loop as small as possible as I have found a big loop can and will entangle the fly. I use the Orvise knot when tying on flies in all other circumstances.

Sometimes called Lefty's knot, Kreh loop, loop knot, etc. Best I have found, easy to tie, clean strong knot.

By the way, if you like the clinch knot, give the San Diego jam knot a try. Super strong and easy to tie, even in the dark.

Try my loop knot. You can make the loop as small as the eye, even a size 14 fly.

I use the non-slip mono loop knot and it works fine. I tried the perfection loop, even sat in front of the video tutorial and tied one after another. They were breaking way too easy. After losing one decent fish to a leader that broke off right at the loop knot, that was the end of it.

I use a double clinch knot.

This is my opinion...so take it with a grain of salt...but I use Improved clinch knot for 99% of every fly I tie on. I tried everything under the sun, but I haven't noticed a loop knot being any more beneficial in the water in catch rate. I would avoid the perfection loop. I used that for a few months and just had consistent break-offs. It's fun to tie on and whatnot, but just not as good as I hoped for. There have been several tried and true recommendations already, but for me, *shrugs* the improved clinch knot is hard to beat.
