Told my wife and daughter that I'd go try to figure out this crappie fishing thing on Ray Hubbard and take them out once I had a clue... (they don't like the bass fishing routine... they get bored. Thought I'd have a better chance on keeping their interest with crappie... maybe not???)
I went out on Ray Hubbard today to give it a go... Beautiful day; so, I hit the bridges... Score: 5 lost jigs, 0 bites.
Had the 8lb line... loaded up on the various 1/8th oz hair jigs, crappie thunder, etc... (pink/chartreuse, junebug/chartreuse, white/blue); but, no luck...

So, back to the question hopefully to others that were out there as well... was it just an off day or was I just doin it wrong???

I have really tried to learn how to catch crappie on Ray Hubbard because it is so close to the house. I have never figured that lake out. I have much better luck on Lavon and Tawakoni and they have become my go to lakes. I wish I could learn Hubbard because it is 10 minutes from the house.

There should definitely be some fish on the I-30 bridge. I would start at about 15 ft and work my way down till I start catching fish.

Use graph n find brush piles or structure of some sort in 25 ft if there is no fish move on and find something else keep graphing till u see fish then the chartreuse should produce something with it getting colder they could start moving out to ledges and drop offs pretty soon but find em on graph first

the 30 bridge is producing some descent fish in 20-25 feet of water. 1/16 pink head with a salt and pepper skirt. monkey milk, cajun cricket have been some effective colors(bobby garland baits). minnows are great 2 cranks off of the bottom.

find em first,..I'd start with minnows, tie a 3/8oz bell weight on the bottom of your line, then a #2 brass crappie hook about 14-18" up on a little loop so the minnow can move around. I hook my minnows through the chin and out the top of the head. Crappie like the bottom most of the time, lower the line down slowly until you feel the weight touch bottom and the line goes slack. I like to touch bottom and raise the line slowly about a foot at a time up about 2-3 feet. Then back down and feel bottom, repeat. Sometimes I'll let it lay on bottom with about one inch of slack, I think that gives the minnow a dead effect and they hit it...This time of year fishing slowly with very little movement has been best for us. Jig fishing is tough, and takes some learning, believe me, I'm trying. But crappie love minnows,..good luck. hooked

I'm 15mins from ray Hubbard. Thru the summer I was killin' the crappie under the I-30 bridge. So much so that I didn't even bother going to other lakes. In the last 3 weeks I've gone to Ray Hubbard 4 times, and have caught 3 crappie and had maybe 7 bumps. It is CRAZY! ! ! I went to Lavon yesterday, and was one of 11 boats along the dam. I caught 3 with jigs, but everyone else was killin' the crappie with minnows. The 2 boats on either side of me were just pulling them in the boat. I bought some minnows today and went out to Ray Hubbard. I fished with jigs and minnows under I-30 bridge, trees in 30' of water and at the dam. I caught ONE crappie today on a jig at one of the trees. I had no bumps, other than that.

Long story short. . . I don't know what happened to Ray Hubbard. When I say I was killin' it this summer up till 3 weeks ago, I mean it was fan-freakin'-tastic! ! ! If somebody can tell me where they went, I'd be thankful.

Rough day which happens some times. Me and Hogon fished Lewisville on Saturday and the bite was a little tough. Checked the bridges which were void of the little boogers. Checked brush piles in 15 foot and less with no takers. Finally found some on brush piles in 22' of water. We would catch 4 or 5 off each pile and had to keep moving. We caught fish on a tough day and brought home 7 nice ones for dinner for me and the wife so all was good.

How much time do you rely or spend on your electronics? There where plenty of guys on the 35 bridge that were not having any luck. I graphed every column and could see why they were not getting bit because the crappie were not there. I would scan trees and could see that nobody was home so I would keep moving. Some brush piles had fish on them and some were void.

I haven't had any luck on Hubbard in the past 3 weeks myself. I went on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and caught only one fish (Sandie). I used jigs and minnows and I bet I only got about 4-5 bumps. Hopefully those were just bad days.

Finding them is the tough part. I took home 19 nice sized keepers from Lewisville on Saturday. Went back to the same spots on Sunday and caught 3 dinks, went home after two hours. Two weeks ago I caught a limit on Thursday and 19 on the following Sunday. Bridges get hit hard and often, easy to get to and everybody knows where they are. You'll have better luck finding some hidden brushpiles that a smaller number of people know about imo.

Yep, I tried every color combo I had, but didn't think about changing the size of my jig head. I am still learning!
