She has been married to my son for 20+ years & has addressed me as Mr. Gatlin all this time. All the family was together this past Friday. She came out with this Mr. Gatlin phrase again. I responded to her by asking her to call me Don from now on. A big smile appeared on her face. I also asked my granddaughter & her new husband to call me Don also. I believe this is ok. Everyone called my grandmother Katie & it seemed natural. She was only 42 when I was born & thought she was too young to be called grandmom.
What do each of you call each other in your families?

I call my in-laws by their first names. No way I could ever call them mom or dad, but Mr. or Mrs. seems way too formal.

Only took you 20 years to let her call you Don?

Everyone in our family calls everyone by their first name, or "grandparent name", and me by my last name. We're pretty casual.

What a sign of respect. After 20 years, she still had respect for you to call you Mr.. These days, that's rare. She's a keeper~

My parents told my wife to call them by their first names the first time they met her. They say that to all of my friends. I waited for my in-laws to correct me from calling them Mr and Mrs for five years and it never happened. My brother and sister in law call them by their first names and have since I've been around the family. I finally just started calling them by their first names, which it turns out they prefer, but they never officially requested it.

I prefer the way my parents handled it.

Dad was Dad until the grandkids came along then he became Grandpa.
When he died the position was vacant until my grandkids came along then I assumed the Grandpa title.
In my ex wife's family the grandparents were Momo and Popo which never figured out.

It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.... W.C.Fields

I just got my first one this past Saturday. Guess I will have to monitor this situation. Pretty sure she has never called Mr.
