I've watched this reel at Cabela's in Allen sit at $320 for the past couple months. It was marked "used" but it doesn't appear to have ever seen a reel seat. Not a scratch. I finally called for a manager this evening and took a swing at it. After waiting for a few minutes, he came back with the new tag and asked "Will this work for you?" Turned out to be a good evening.

Beautiful reel but what makes it worth so much? Could I likely just pull a Swedish Abu from my collection that would match its capabilities?

I am with you .....
Tell me WHAT it is that a STEEZ can do that makes it worth that kind of money.
and I am being serious, I would really like to know.........
is it----
weight
casting distance
automatic "no backlash"
transfer of "bite feel" to your hand
longevity of use (years)
????????????

AND I am sure that the OP is very happy with his purchase & considers it a GREAT DEAL ,,,,,, why ?

All bait casters pretty much do the same thing. Some just perform those functions much better than others. They cast farther, retrieve smoother, all but eliminates backlash regardless of wind or lure weight, higher gear ratio options, better ergonomics, better drag system. It's just one more way to increase the odds of catching more and bigger fish. If you are serious about getting more information on baitcaster advancements, you can research different brand and model specs. I can send links, I suppose. Technology comes at a price. Same with rods, line, tackle, electronics, trolling motors, batteries, boats, etc. If you're happy with olsder reels, by all means, have at it. It'll sure save you a lot of money in the long run. BTW, you may want to take advantage of the technological advancements in keyboards. It looks like some of your keys are sticking. Especially that question mark. roflmao

Better internal components, better performance, lighter, further casting distance, etc.. It's not a magical reel, but you get what you pay for. For example, if you've used a $300+ reel and you've used a $100 reel, you can definitely tell the difference if you pay attention. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a $100 reel, but there's a definite difference in overall comparison between a $100 reel and $300+ reel.

My cheapest reel is $200. I buy expensive reels because I can afford it and I feel I get better performance. This can apply to any other angler.

Please note, these are just my opinions. Not trying to start an argument.

To the OP, that's a good score! Enjoy the reel!

Without a doubt you could. It will weigh a touch more but cleaned and lubed properly there won't be a really noticeable difference. Reel performance is more about using the right rod and bait combo so it all works together. Don't get me wrong, that steez is a sweet reel and that's not a bad deal on one

I wonder what a Swedish Abu would sell for new these days if they still made them.

That is a good price for that reel. Value is in the eyes of the buyer. I use more expensive equipment on techniques that I use a lot and will buy things a little more budget friendly on techniques that I don't. I would have payed 250 for that reel if for no other reason than to resell it. Could probably sell it for 25-50 dollars more.

I can only speculate. Constructed the exact same way, I'd suspect $60-$70. I know what a new Ambassadeur with modern construction and components costs. $399.95

So there's another good question... I'm young so never used round reels. What gives with people loving them? Can't stand the way they feel. Used my grandpas old Abu round reel and yuck! Quality reel obviously to last that long but, what are other advantages to round reels? Is it just cause people are used to them?

I own a dozen steez reels....and, back when I bought them they were unique in that, at the time, they were the lightest, best made reels money could buy. Over the last few years, I have found equally made reels for half the price. They are great reels, but the Korean and Malaysian reels have caught up with the quality and made the need to spend $600 for a reel, in order to get a great product, unnecessary.

Congrats on the great deal you got on the reel.

My first mistake was buying my first Metanium. I have several now. My second mistake was buying my first Cerates. All my spinning reels are those now. Do they do the same thing as other reels, yes. Better? If I didn't feel that was the case I would have stopped at the first one.

Congrats on the Steez score.

The Steez is a fantastic reel. The problem with buying one is after using it for a while you will want more of them. I have 7 of them.

that no doubt is a very nice find...I have a few of them and they are my favorite reels without question.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.
