I'd like to take my six-year-old for some bank or dock fishing on Lake Conroe. Looking to keep some decent size brim/sunfish, crappie, or whatever is biting. The main places I saw recommended online are still closed post-Harvey (Stubblefield, Lake Conroe Park). Ideally, I'd like to find a spot with a dock/pier and a bathroom. I don't mind paying a small fee to fish at a marina or park. Any recommendations?

A few weeks ago we tried Cagle Recreation Area, but they don't allow fishing from the dock, and we had no bites fishing from shore. We moved on to the FM 830 boat ramp and kept some decent size sunfish (despite heavy traffic and some swimmers), but there's no bathroom there.

Thanks!

Ended up fishing for about 20 minutes at Stow-A-Way Marina. Didn't have any bites or see the other guy have any luck. So we moved to FM 830 boat ramp. Caught three seven-inch sunfish. Good enough for a meal.

Just having a conversation with myself here in case someone else finds it useful. smile
Went to Lake Conroe Park last weekend when it opened at 9:00 a.m. Stayed for two hours and saw one person catch a small catfish. We had a large sunfish almost on the dock but it slipped off the hook. Saw some fish (bass?) jumping out of the water after baitfish and threw a shallow crankbait for a while with no luck.

Read through some old threads here and on other sites that suggested the docks near the McDonald's and IHOP on Highway 105. Unfortunately, times have changed -- there are "no fishing" signs posted all over near the McDonald's. No signs near the IHOP, so we stopped for a meal and fished the docks afterward from about 8 to 9 a.m. No luck except some small sunfish. Saw a few guys bass fishing the area and crossing under 105.

Then we fished from the pier at the park further down the road. Caught three sunfish in the 8-10" range, one >14" bass, and one <14" bass. Nightcrawlers on a float.

Thanks for the reports. I have very little experience fishing Conroe but I know there are a ton of people on here that fish. Primarily from the boat. I know there are plenty of bank spots off the 1375 bridge but no dock that I know of

Thanks! I check it out sometime soon. Probably taking a break from Conroe during the rainbow trout stocking season.

Yeah I am looking forward to catching a few stockers and having fresh trout for dinner.

There are spots along the west side of the lake directly across from Cagle. Take a look at Google maps and find Forest Road 204 & FM 1375. Head south on 204 and then east on 248.
From there you will eventually see several unofficial campsites right on the water. No bathrooms though and it does get busy on most nice weather weekends.

No pier but you can wade / cast from shore.

Thanks. What would you be fishing for there, just catfish or also sunfish/bass?

There's lots of panfish and small bass all along the shores of that cove. I'm in a boat so it's a bit easier to fish. The water depth drops off quickly (+18ft in spots) on the main lake side so catfish may be an option.

Thanks again for recommending this area to fish. We finally made it back up to Conroe and gave it a shot today. Just took three sunfish up to 9 inches and a 2-lbs drum in 1-2 feet of water. Didn't wade out to the deeper water this time, but saw three or four anglers targeting the area.

It was disheartening to see the campsites. Several looked like this. Who likes nature enough to go camping and not enough to clean up after themselves?? And this pile had diapers, so they're teaching another generation... mad

If you fish public access points long enough you sadly will learn that the answer to your questions is "a lot of people." I fish the Paluxy River a lot and the favorite activity of the locals during the summer is to park their truck in the river, listen to country music and drink beer. Of course, when they finish with their beer, they just throw it straight in the river. That river is naturally beautiful with its super clear water and great fishing, but fish there mid-summer and it looks like a trash dump.
