saw this pic in an old Whopper Stopper Bait co. catalog and it brought back memories of fishing out of boats like this...
prior to the 70's,most people didn't own a bass boat....they carried their motor and paddle in trunk of their car (nobody except farmers drove pick up trucks) and rented a boat at the marina on the lake...like the boat in the picture, these boats were small and didn't have much freeboard.....you had to be very careful because they were easy to swamp or tip over and few people carried life jackets.....

I fished out of a 10" piepan boat when I was a kid but that one pre-dates even me!

Cool pic.

I remember fishing out of one of these, that a friend had on a pond in our neighborhood. Those things were very tippy, and any movement from one side to the other, you could be going for a swim.

I would gladly go back to one of those if it meant that the lakes would be as empty as they were back then. Whatever it takes to get more of you off my waters.

One of the first boats I fished out of was not even aluminum, and it certainly wasn't fiberglass....it was a jon boat built of wood - cypress planks! It sure was quiet, though...

I fished out of a 10' johnboat with a 5hp Briggs & Stratton...with a concrete filled coffee can anchor.

The US mail was faster.

Could not even afford a trolling motor on mine. We rowed to where we wanted to fish, then I sit sideways on the bow and sculled the boat all day long. Won my first tournament out of a 12 ft. Sears Jon..

Turned one over in the middle of Belton lake back in the 70s. Lost most of my gear and scarred the daylights out of me. Holding on for ever and screaming for help. I can laugh about it now.

My Dad and I fished out of Mill Creek Marina at Lake Texoma,(run by a guy name Montague)not out of boat like that, though. We rented an aluminum boat and took our 9 HP Wizard outboard from Western Auto out of the car trunk and put it on the alum. boat. We caught lots of Crappie, Sand Bass and an occasional black bass. I convinced my Dad that lures (plugs) worked by catching a Bass, while trolling across a point on our way to our Crappie spot. That started my Dad Bass fishing, mainly out of Tawakani.

My dad, myself and brother fished out of a 15' Arkansas Traveler with a 20 hp. Kiekhaefer Mercury. We were $hittin in high cotton. Trolled Hellbenders all over Possum Kingdom cause the reels wouldn't cast'em.
