So literally 10 minutes ago i was fishing from a dock on Cedar Creek with a whopper plopper and a great horned owl comes out of nowhere and attacks it...it quickly let go so no harm, no foul (fowl?)...scared the heck out of me...just curious if this has happened to anyone else?????

Actually, yes. I had an owl attack my buzzbait one night while on the water.

I had just bought a new rod one day, got home and mounted a reel to it and decided to cast at the house. Tied in a t-rig just to see how it cast and first cast in yard an owl came out of tree. Scared the living daylights out of as I only had about 10 foot of line out. Thank God I reacted quick and snatched it away.

years ago was fishing flooded timber in an oxbow lake just off the Miss river...it was during shad spawn and there were quite a few owls up in the trees and they would dive down and grab shad minnows that would flip up out of the water onto to the floating drift piles....
I was fishing a chrome crazy shad and an owl dived down, grabbed the bait and started flying off...the owl was just a few feet off the water and I jerked back hard enough to make the owl crash into the water and when it hit the water, thankfully the plug came loose...
the owl flopped across the water probably 10-15 yards to nearest floating log and crawled out....we were fishing in this general area and I kinda kept an eye on the owl to see what it would do....I think the owl was probably too wet to fly so it flapped it's wings and shook kinda a dog shedding water then sat there with it's wings stretched out drying for probably 30 minutes before it flew back up into the trees...

Man..that'd be enough make me jump a little. Lol.

I had a Eagle swing down for a fish close to my boat at Fairfield more than once. Really cool to watch when your prepared for it.

Several years ago on the Atchafalaya I couldn't keep the owls off a Horny Toad. The last time I stuck my rod tip underwater and reeled as fast as I could. The owl didn't like that and got within six feet of me, flapping its wings and screeching. I thought we were about to do combat and I wasn't looking forward to it.

A few years back at Monticello, I had a man and his young son. His boy couldn't cast a baitcaster well so I started trolling a DD22. I threw the bait out, left it in freespool for him and handed him the rod. I put the big motor in gear and started idling toward a hump. I tell him to keep letting out line until I say okay.

a few seconds later I say, Okay put it in gear. He is looking straight down at the reel. As he puts it in gear, he lets out a squeal. His bait is 40 feet in the air! A seagull had swooped down and grabbed it and took off.

He 'Fights" the bird back to the boat and we get the gull in the net. The bird is trying to bite me and claw me as I am trying to get the line untangled from around its claws. It was a HOOT! Finally I get the bait loose and we release the gull to fight another day.

hooked several seagulls while fishing on the coast, The weirdest thing I caught was a road runner. I was testing a real in the back yard as I had a long heavy tube tied on. First cast a road runner comes out of nowhere and starts fighting it like its a snake. Of course it gets tangled up and I have to get a hold of it to get it untangled. Turns out it was very calm during the process. I was expecting it to be hard to handle and trying to peck my eyes out.

I had the same thing happen on Brown's Lake south of Mexia. A great horned owl attacked my jitterbug.

While fishing on bob sandlin I tossed a weightless fluke to a dock and a great blue heron jumped off the handrail and grabbed the fluke. It was 15 feet in the air when I gently applied some pressure and turned his head and he let it go. Imagine the scene if the hook had set.

Several years ago while fishing from shore one evening with a buddy for some of those Seuannee bass on the Seuannee River in FL I had an owl, a small one, come out of a tree and take the jitterbug I was throwing out of the river and up into that tree. I never hooked it, thank goodness, but my buddy and I laughed so hard our sides hurt and tears came to our eyes. While light tackle fishing in the surf on the TX coast I've also had seagulls take my spoon out of the air a couple of times and I've also had a pelican dive on and get hooked by a spoon I was pulling through the surf. Birds are not a lot off fun to take off the hook.

I had a hawk swoop down and fly towards my frog while in the air mid-cast but it changed its mind before grabbing it. Was surprising to see him go towards it nonetheless.

I sure wish iPhones existed 15 or so years ago. Was fishing offshore in CA using weightless live sardines over the kelp beds and my dad caught and reeled in a BIG pelican. To say this was comical doesn't do it justice. That was one pissed off bird!! I've had numerous other times at the Texas coast fishing a top water bait where a pelican or seagull would try to eat the bait as well.

Seeing what you did with that owl would have been awesome!
