Marc Mitchell's fishing report mentions a Fall spawn on Fork.
Just wondering what you Lake Fork guys thoughts are about this?

I would tend to believe what Marc Mitchell says. He is out there LOTS.

I am not a Fork Guy; but I know it happens on other lakes like Falcon and Amistad. If Mr. Mitchell says it is taking place then you better get you some of it. I am sure it is on a much smaller scale than in the Spring. A week like this with a huge warming trend will put them right up there.

Ive had a guide tell me that a few do it on rayburn. Theyre out there more than anybody so i tend to think they may be right. I also believe bass like to be a lot shallower than we think in water we think is cold. Anything over 55 and I think they will stay pretty shallow if they have some cover to get by

I have caught fish off beds in the fall. Not bigguns but 2-3 pound males. I think the water cooling down into the 60's fools some of the young bucks and they get all excited thinking they mating season is here again.

Caught fat bucks dirt shallow on Lewisville yesterday. Same places you�d expect them to be during the spawn

Not on fork, but I caught a 5 lber the other day up pretty shallow and it's tail was torn up just like in the spring.

When there was more grass in the lake I have actually witnessed 2-3 pounders in a fanned out spot guarding the bed. No females nearby but they were very obviously on a bed they had made. And it wasn't just an isolated fish or two. We caught half a dozen one afternoon up in LF Creek one day all off beds in late Oct.

I've seen it on other lakes. I've seen bass fry in November and December before so I know some of them did successfully spawn.

I don't buy it for a minute.

Far from traditional thinking but I guess anything is possible. I've never heard a fisheries biologist discuss this or even TP&W publish anything about it. Knowing that bass are territorial it's possible they are marking their territory for a future mate. Realistically speaking though that would be like a man renting a motel room and then sit back and wait for a girlfriend to show up. Crude metaphor but it makes a point. I have witnessed bass on a bed in June but figured he was too ugly to get a mate, lol. If they are on beds I'll be on the lookout tomorrow and report back if I see evidence. I've seen weirder things in my life. Saw a dog mate with a chicken one time and a bicycle with a steering wheel.

Few years back I saw small fry shallow in a 26 acre private tank first week of December. It's very deep (35+ feet makes up 80% of it) and super clear.

I scooped some of these unknowns up in a bucket and put them in my koi pond.

By early spring they were 3 inches long and clearly bass.

How were they less than fingernail size the first week of December if they had not been born a week or two before in November?

The tank is not stocked... so riddle me that.

Believe it or not, it still happens. Some bass can and do spawn in the fall.

Marc Mitchell is telling the truth, if you know where to find them you can sight fish for bedding bass in the fall. I didn't know it was such a secret.
