Never catfished much and if I have its been for channel, but I have the urge to try to catch something big. Im going to wait until winter because people have told me that's my best bet, but I had a couple of quick questions:
1. where would I find shad on the lake during winter?
2. where would I fin blues at during winter (I know nothing about them, trying to research them)
3. not looking for "honey holes" but does anyone have an ok starting spot for me to try to help me catch my first one that they are willing to share?
I am a catch and release fishermen just wanting to catch a new species really! Would love any help given! wink

Ive only fished Waco three times Cole, seems like we caught some at the ramp and the rest at the bubbles over by the dam-
Dont hesitate to try the chicken thing also-

You can catch all the shad you want at the aeration bubbles by the damn. Make sure you get there before sundown. The shad leave at dark and don't come back until daylight.

I booked and had a great trip with Spud there last year. There's some good blues there if you can find them. Good luck!

I have caught 40lb blues out of Waco in 1.5ft of water, and 40 ft of water.................... In the same day.
Right now they really could be anywhere. This weekend you should be able to find some fish on windblown points, and banks.

So would my best bet be going to the windblown areas of the lake and focusing on ledges or deep holes around the points?

This weekend id fish shallow windblown banks. But waco has been kicking my tail this year so the opposite may be better. The only way to really know is to get out there and eliminate water until you find them.

yea that makes since... Iv always heard of santee cooper rigs and Carolina rigs for deep cats, do you do the same thing shallow? Or different rigs? Also, what would I look for when fishing shallow? A shallow flat with deep water nearby or wood or what?

Buy you a drift sock and drift fish for them off the points and windblown banks. Use the Santee rig. The key to catching cats while drifting is to drift SLOW. Use two socks in heavy wind. By drifting you can cover a lot of water. Each time you start a new drift change something if you haven't had any bites (depth, etc). When you think you are drifting slow enough slow it down some more. Try to keep your shad alive until you cut them to put them on the hook. Catfish like fresh shad the best.
