I will be coming down to SPI this Jan. & Feb. Wondering what I will need. I love to fly fish, is it worth the effort to bring a 8# fly rod? I used it in Port A but not in Mexico Beach, FL. or Gulf Shores, AL. How about SPI? Should I bring my ghost shrimp pump or my sand flea pail. Should I bring my waders? Any advise will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, SPI stands for South Padre Island. I was wondering if it worth the hassle of bringing my fly rod, my waders, my ghost shrimp pump and my sand flea pail down to use during the Winter months. I have fly fished the Upper Laguna Madre in the Winter when we stayed at Port A and did quite well. They talk about wade fishing the Lower Laguna Madre on this forum but does it work to wade fish the area in the Winter.

I have used my fly rod a lot down there. However, it was from a lighted fishing pier after dark. I have caught numerous snook, trout, and ladyfish, using clousers. I have seen fly rodders fishing from the jetty for whatever swims. I use an 8 weight just in case I get into something reasonably large.

There are some areas that are awesome for fly anglers, spinning gear is best for bays.

And wade fishing can just as awesome in the winter as well as any other season, just gotta know the right area for the time of year you are fishing.

Fish eat year round, they just change locations based on conditions.

Bring it for sure. 8wt is all you will need. I line up on a 8wt and toss 9wt bonefish line from orvis. Cuts the wind very well. Give me a ring when you get down and I'll give you a few flies to try out.

Well, Capt. Andrew, I thank you very much! I put you on my favorites. Should be there on Jan. 14th, until Feb. 28th. Leo
