While recently fly fishing the Trinity River, I saw a family of four carrying a stringer (possibly 8-10) buffalo back to their vehicle. At the time I didn't say anything, but as I thought of it I wish I did. Some of you may know, but the buffalo (white, smallmouth, bigmouth, etc.) CAN and WILL cause Haff Disease if you are not careful. Especially in the Trinity River. Just advising everyone. Y'all be safe and make sure you do your research before you attempt to consume any fish from our waters! God Bless.

Okay, I believe you.
But how do they get around this, when you see Buffalo in a fish market?
I would hope they are not selling infected fish.
I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us. Hopper

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00056038.htmHuh. The CDC report shows cases in three other states, but the only case it mentions in Texas was in 1984. What information do you have about this disease being present in Texas now?

A few years ago, while crappie fishing, I caught a huge Buffalo that we estimated to be around forty pounds. We turned him loose, but because that was the first Buffalo I ever caught, I did quite a lot of internet research on the species. I was surprised to learn that Buffalo was excellent table fare and sold in many fish markets. I did encounter some info regarding Haff Disease. At that time, most of the articles I found said Haff Disease was limited to fish that came from the Mississippi River Basin. I assumed that meant Texas Buffalo were safe. Today, I found some info that a few cases of Haff Disease occurred in Texas many years ago. Accordingly, I noticed you identified the Trinity as particularly dangerous. It appears that bottom feeding creatures, including carp, Buffalo, and crawfish can pick up a toxin while eating the roots of certain aquatic plants. That toxin causes Haff Disease in humans. I suppose that not a great deal of people eat carp or buffalo, but crawfish is certainly a hot item in the South.

Correct, there aren't too many known cases in Texas. Primarily Louisana, parts of the Mississippi, and the Trinity. This family took them from the Trinity, so I was just giving out a warning. Buffalo are detrivores, and eat the sediment and eroded waste and soil from rocks and the bottom. Right where the pollution lurks. Thanks to y'all for the information and feedback, it's up to us to educate future fishermen about the dangers of consuming certain fish from certain locations.

Depends on which part of the Trinity. Those toxins are the reason for the consumption ban on the main fork. If you're on the Elm Fork, say, between LL and RR or in Irving then you are good to go...

When I was a kid, folks used to come and gill net our 77 acre lake for Buffalo. I didn't even know the fish were in the lake. I always heard the Buffalo were turned into gefilte fish for the kosher market.

Buffalo is one of the most tastiest fresh water fish in Texas! And is STILL one of the most popular fish sold by commercial fishermen.

A few months ago, I was watching a Saturday morning food show. On that day, they were featuring some of the most popular restaurant offerings around the USA. One that caught my eye was a cafe up in the Midwest where their specialty dish was fried carp. Seriously, they had a huge local following. They were frying large sections of whole fish with the bones intact. The show host interviewed several of the diners and they all said they had come to this place for years because the carp was so delicious. Live and learn, I guess.
