Hey guys, I have juglined for a long time with either stationary jugs or free floating suspended jugs and I think there has to be a better way of juglining to cover water with staying in contact with the bottom despite depth change! I'm wondering about trying to rig up some free floating santee cooper rigged juglines and curious if anybody has ever tried that. I think the biggest variable will be how much weight to clip onto the string to slow the jug line down based on wind conditions and desirable drift speed depending on time of year. I think if I can get a few of those variables down then it would be deadly because all my juglines would be staying a few feet off the bottom while drifiting down an island or point or ledge.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed and I'm excited to start experimenting with the rigging!

Sounds like a solid plan. I usually set mine with enough weight that they don't drift much, but I set mine in areas that have a lot of trees.

I have jugged for many years and will not jug with a light weight unless I'm real close the whole time. Especially in hang up areas. If you will be around most the time just use a 10 oz weight and let it go.. But a nice blue will take it for a nice ride..

Yep these juglines will be in open areas with no potential to be hung up so no issue there. Its going to take a little bit to figure out how much weight to use per wind conditions to get drift speed right. I'm also wondering how effective the hook set will be since the string will have some play...usually, we set juglines so if the fish pulls on the hook it doesn't take long at all to meet resistance and get hooked and if I'm leaving lots of slack so it can drift off the top of the island and down the slope into the creek channel. I think it will need lots of play in the string to stay on the bottom until it gets to the deepest parts I'm fishing in the area. So I am thinking I may be fishing in water 22 feet deep ontop of the island but with string set out about 35 feet so it makes it down the entire slope. I'm wondering if I will end up having to use a big float as part of the santee rig itself so it can help set the hook.... Going to definitely be an experiment for several trips but I think if I figure it all out it may be one of the deadliest jug line rigs out there due to it covering all depths in a single drift. I'll let you know what my trips show.

My friend in Lafayette fish in the winter in 4-9 fow and use minimal weight and the catch tons. They run them every hour. Cut mullet.

Nice! Currently, all I would use on my free-floating jug lines is a casting net weight just to keep the line from floating. They work awesome for free-floating suspend fishing! I'm thinking of making a youtube video soon over how I rigged them but would like to see if I can find a good way of doing this santee-cooper rig via jugline first to include

That's an interesting thought though! I'm betting I will end up finding I need a larger float than the standard 3 inch ones you can buy at academy to help set the hook but who knows. I plan to experiment with it some Monday if the weather isn't crazy windy. I got the catfish pinpointed at Fort Phantom right now

good to know Rat - I don't jug-line much at all - i primarily fish line & reel from kayak - though i do own a few jug-lines to use when i plan a fish fry for family - and didn't know the yo-yo's were illegal - i was just going from memory seeing them in Ecuador occasionally when i grew up there and thought it would be a neat solution to his problem. That said - respect - i recently (about 3 months ago) switched my jug-lines to this design to better work in my kayak - Kayak Jug-Line - ditch the clip for locking the line or modify it to only give enough resistance to drag the weight in a drift (unrolling only as needed for the weight to drop deeper). Really you could play around a bit with how the clip on the float interacts with the line (using loops/knots maybe even make it self stopping when pulled hard)
