I just bought land in unit which border unit 751 and can not wait to get into this! I have heard getting a tag is a big deal...do you guys who do this every year buy an outfitter tag, are you just lucky, or what's the scoop on that?
Everyone I have talked to about my new place has told me chances are pretty low of drawing a tag each year.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

This link shows if you are a resident its 100% they didn't even give out all their tags. The nonresidents different story looks to be almost impossible to get a tag they give out 3 to nonresidents. You can get landowner tags or outfitter tags but they are usually pretty expensive. That will cost you a few thousand dollars to get them. To answer the other question just because you own land in states doesn't mean you can just go hunt for elk. The elk are protect in theses states for their value to the states. The states use the tags to maintain a healthy over all herd. The article above states the herd is not growing even tho they have lowered the amount of tags given out, this is a bad sign for this area over the long term. Wolfs and grizzly bears have been very bad for the moose, sheep, rams, and elk herds in the rockies. https://huntscore.com/hunts/co/elk/1271d200-d73e-44f1-b550-97b5d1864908

Im pretty sure you will get a tag every year if you own the land and most of the draw stuff is for public land which if you own it then its not public.

I will add one more thought some think if you own land you automatically get a land owner tag. This is not true. There are steps you can take if you own land and if you can prove damage by the elk to the state hunting and fishing people. Their has to be a certain number of elk go across your land a certain amount of days per year every year to get these land owner tags. The fish and game departments do not give out these tags like the use to because people started coming from out of state to just by a few areas to get these tags so they just quit giving out these tags without a lot of proof they have damage to their land because of the elk. The tags where suppose to help land owners have a way to get some money for the damage to their land so the land owners wouldn't just kill the elk so they wouldn't eat their grass and hay. They now get tags to sale to offset their lost of money from their cattle and farming operations. The tags were never for to just go hunting that is what the draw system is for. The states up here always give the residents a lot more tags then nonresidents. They also check other states to see if you buy resident hunting or fishing license and if they think you are not telling the truth about that they will have you sent in tax returns to prove where you are a resident. They will take your privilege to hunt in the US for 5 years to life if found you are not telling the truth about this. they take it real serious up here. These states get a lot of revenue from hunting and they protect it to keep it around for years to come. I know people that have been fined up to 100,000 and lost hunting privileges for life. They welcome people with open arms to come but they do require everyone to obey the laws and most do not know what they are till they get here. Good luck the 751 area is a great area and you and your family will have a lot of memories for many years to come. I do not believe their is anything you can do that is more fun then bow hunting Elk during the rut.

You have to have a elk tag to hunt in the states that have elk. The only way to get one is through the draw system, landowner tag[ which are almost impossible to do without a lot of proof], outfitter tags which will cost you a lot of money usually 3-5 thousand dollars depending on the area and you can buy over the counter tags but only to hunt in general areas. You can not use those tags unless your land is in a general area. the 751 is a draw area you cannot use a over the counter general area tag in 751 that is a draw only area.

I do not believe their is anything you can do that is more fun then bow hunting Elk during the rut. Sure there is. But not with your clothes on I remember a story about my brother when we were hunting here in Wyoming. We were up in the Big Horns, we had a call called a hooch momma, it sounds like a cow elk or calf depending on setting. He was looking down the mountain and about 3/4 mile down the hill he saw about a 350 class 6X6 and his 6 cows. He wanted to know how far they could hear his call so he hit it a couple of times to see if he could get a respond. He was sitting next to a evergreen tree that was about 30 feet around the bottom of the tree. When he hit the call the big bull look straight up the mountain and started running to the sound. When he stopped he was standing the other side of the tree he was standing next to now. The bull started walking really slowly in front of the tree looking for the cow. He was going to come out about 4 feet from my brother as the bull was just about to come out he realized this bull was up here for one of two things. He was there to either breed something or fight, he realized at that point he wasn't really sure at 4 feet away with a bow which one he wanted the bull up here after!!! LOL

Went to the Valle Vidal in NM a few weeks ago. There was an elk herd right by the road near Shuree Ponds. Heard them calling the whole time we were there. Did you draw a tag to the Valle Vidal? I've been trying for 9 years! Probably hardest tag to draw in the state. No. Sorry. I was there to fish, but always enjoy seeing the elk.
