My uncle and I are heading down Sunday from Oklahoma for some fishing and relaxation. We plan on spending some time on the jetties in and around Port A. We were hoping to run into some reds, jacks, and/or kings but would take anything for the fight. Has anyone been out recently to know if they are hitting artificial baits? If not, we were wondering if the finger mullet have been roaming around close enough to get a net on them or should we be prepared to purchase some live bait? Also, how has the surf been around the jetties? Read some post that the tides are higher than normal which I know can make it pretty rough out on the end. Any information would be appreciated.

Definitely plan on spending some money in Port A. Ive seen the satellite picks so we are prepared to wade over to get on the jetties, especially if the fish are biting. Ive been going to Port A for 35 years so we will do anything we can to help. Appreciate the response.

I was there Saturday (7th) and the tide was so high that there wasn't any beach. The surf was very rough and the water dirty all the way out to the rigs.

With the super high tides, beach access has been tough. Looks much better for the weekend, although tides are still running above normal. Live mullet has been plentiful and not a problem to net around Packery. With the high water draining from the Laguna Madre on the outgoing tide, Packery channel will be full of forage, so the predator fish may be out in force. You should have a very good chance of catching some redfish on live finger mullet, large chunks of cut mullet or ladyfish from the jetties or in the surf. With the water clearing this weekend, I would also look for Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish and Jacks to hit as well. For artificials, I would try the usual topwaters in the channel mainly for trout, various spoons, or twitch baits such as the Rapala X-Rap or Mirrolures. Expect crowds as a lot of anglers will be about, and Shark a Thon is going on this weekend also.
