I have a crew going to the white river in early November and am wondering if anyone has tips on flies (or even conventional baits) to bring? I fished there a few years ago in Oct and we used very small midges if I recall correctly. Some of the guys I am going with are not fly fishermen so any conventional baits you would recommend are appreciated too. Trout or Smallmouth stuff. We just want to catch some fish. Will be on the stretch below Cottam I think.

I have fished up there many times. Not a fly fisherman, so my advice is for the other guys. Gold and gold/red spoons. Online spinners with gold blade. White crappie jigs. Also small rapala crank baits. I can't stress enough how important it is to use 4lb line clear or floro. Take your bass tackle with 10-12 line and once it gets dark cast large stick baits 6-8 inch in rainbow trout or white pattern. Brown trout feed on the rainbows sleeping at night. My largest was a 27 inch brown I caught on a 6 inch stick bait in Rainbow trout pattern. When all Elsie fails and you just need to catch fish... corn and powerbait eggs. Those two things will catch you triple digit fish a day. I have had a 73 fish day on gold/red 1/4 oz spoon.

Sow bugs and scuds in grey black and olive. Coral scuds work real well right when they kick on the generators. At night the same stuff and add the biggest nastiest streamers you have buggers work black leaches articulated streamers baby trout size five to six inches and hang on lol. The places I night fish I scout heavily during the day so I get a mental picture of what I'm fishing at night. Big girls lurk in the dark I spend very little time fishing in the daylight anymore just scouting.

for pretty much any place in the white river chain, all you need are scuds, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, and sculpin/streamers. Follow Roberts advice for what to do. Big streamers at night are deadly!

Grey/black articulated mouse - at dusk into night - shoot it at far as you are able and strip it back - target brownies - .check the Arkansas Fly Flinger website for shore/wade access.

Went with a guide a couple years ago in November and fished spinning tackle. Son and I caught two limits of decent sized rainbows using yellow maribou jigs (think of a larger-sized crappie jig) and a primitive egg pattern that the guide tied. Heard a big brown hit at something near the surface a couple times and tried to entice with a rainbow pattern countdown Rapala with no success. And caught a couple rainbows the next morning fishing Mepps inline spinner from shore.

I've been there often, usually with spinning gear. 1/8 oz and 1/6 oz Rooster Tails work well, Yellow Coachdog is my go-to spinner. Fish them slowly. Use clear line, 4-6 lb test. Rapalas and Panther Martins also work well. If they aren't biting, Berkley PowerBait or a can of corn with a bobber work. Trout have small mouths, I usually mash down the barbs on the hooks to make things easier. Roundhouse Shoal and Rim Shoal are great spots.

Very realistic plan on casting slightly upstream and stripping it like a mouse actually crossing the river in the current getting washed down. There are browns in there that might eat a baby bunny pattern lol.

I'm going to the White over Thanksgiving. I'd try the streamers at night deal if I weren't too askeert. The White's a little intimidating. Big, and, if you're wading as I will be, you have to keep an eye out for the water rising suddenly, then be ready to get out pretty quickly. How you do that in the dark? Since I don't have hiring a guide in my vacation budget, I'm probably going to stick with regular old fishing for mostly rainbows during daylight, minimum flow hours. The other time I went, several years back, I did catch a decent brown on a red-a$$ in the state park.
Say, can anyone recommend good wade access spots? I hear Rim Shoals is the place to go. What about Wildcat Shoals? From what I can gather the actual shoals are a little off from the parking/access area. Is it possible or feasible to wade to them?

I waded Rim Shoals a couple years ago. The upstream tip of the shoals starts about where the parking area ends and the access is easy, although the current was pretty swift when I was there. I have heard that the wade fishing is better on the opposite bank (opposite where you park) but I did not feel comfortable wading across the river or risking getting stuck on the other side if the water rose (had a hard deadline imposed by the wife to get back to the motel).

If you are wading, do the Norfork. Smaller water and more accessible during low flows. If you want the White, yes, Rim Shoals opposite bank is the way to go.
You want any company up there?
