Looking for folks with personal experience with the 6.5 Detroit trucks to give some of their input on the engine itself. I'm tossing around the idea of looking for one for cheap to just fix up and mess around with. Maybe drive around on the weekends/haul the boat short distances every now and then. I'm aware of the PDM/injection pump issues. Looking for real world experience from TFF.

Thanks

I had a 1993 and hated it. It wouldn't pull a sick harlot off a pot and as you mentioned, the fuel system was junk. However, it would get decent fuel mileage, and nothing else on the engine broke while I had it, and the ride of the truck was good I remember, that's comparing to the Fords with leaf spring front suspension that I drove and went back to.

Not really knows as good engines. They were not power houses and do not respond well to trying to make more power with them. They are somewhat know for overheating/temperature issues and the fuel system was a major problem. A really good family friend that is a diesel mechanic owned several of them, he had 3 or 4 at one time and he said the fuel pump would not last more than 50,000 miles and he wouldn't drive one without a spare in the toolbox. That said he pulled a triple axle grain trailer with it a few times a year and said it did good.

I love em. People give hem a bad rap because the dont understand how they operate. The PMD issue is solved by focusing on the 93 model year ONLY. They were DB4 injection pumps. Not the DS4 that had the PMD. The glow plugs will swell and you cant get them out of the head. Easy, thread them all the way out. Pull the injectors, break the tip off and use curved tipped forceps to get the broke off tip out. The injector and glow plugs are in the pre cup; precombustion chamber. So the tip wont fall in to the engine. Yes, they have cracking at cylinder 7 and 8. Why? Coolant pooling in the rear of the block causing hot spots. There are NUMEROUS products in the aftermarket to address this issue. And, this issue is common among all V8 engines of the time. Try to get a J code engine; military use engine = no emissions [censored] to deal with.

Hard start with white smoke out the tail pipe; replace glow plugs.
Hard start with no smoke; replace lift pump. If its mechanical, delete it and install the factory electric for any of the vans and or trucks that have a DS injection pump: 94-99~2000.

We had them in the HMMWV (6.2/6.5 nonturbo/6.5Turbo) and CUCV (6.2/6.5 nonturbo) while in the military. Ive also worked on and modified a few while working as a technician at a diesel repair and performance shop. Any questions please feel free to PM me
