Through out all the replies, I only saw one person really hit on something. What species are you going for? Lavon has a very healthy population of white bass (Sand Bass), crappie, Largemouth bass and catfish. The issue I would have with giving any solid advice is, I have no idea what you are trying to target. I have different setup's for each of those species and the baits are use are different. I'll be more than happy to chime in what what has worked for me, but I'll need to know what you are wanting to catch. There's not a magic lure outside of live bait like minnows that will catch variety every time you go out. (Even live bait doesn't mean you will catch)

Not that this helps. Last week i fished some stumps strickly for crappie. I was determined to stay there all morning and get a crappie. Low and behold i struck out. However I let some other guys tie up next to me who were using minnows and they caught about 8 in the 45 min they were there. This was dishearting but it showed me they are there and I guess my technique is not correct.
One thing i might have messed up on was I didn't really jig it off the side of the boat. I tossed the jig out maybe 10 feet and would jig and reel it to me. They guy there said it would be hard to catch them like that.

Don't anchor, drift until you get bit then drop an anchor. +1

Lavon and Lewisville is full of sand bass. Go to the white bass- Hybrid section. Look for posts from Cedar Creek by Dennis Christian. Click on his Mepps technique and read. Click on his you tube video. Go to the lake and find some sand bass on main lake points with your electronics. And do what he says. Report back.

Update: (feel free to leave advice/comments)
Its been a while since i've said anything so here is how its been going. I decided to update my equipment. I had only one decent rod, a MH lews speed stick. I bought a H2O ethos and a med-light all star classic. I've been trying to go out targeting 1 species instead of just trying to shotgun it. I've failed at catching crappie. I think it is a technique problem, jigging and moving it too much. I've tried to use my fish finder more. This a learning curve however I've gotten some decent success. So far, every-time i go out i've always gotten at least 1 fish (pretty good for me lol)
One recent technique I am doing is trolling the lakes and looking at the fish finder and when i get a hook up. The other day I ended with 4 whites but caught 7 total. I feel this is cheating but I think it has taught me some locations to go to and what to look for on the fish finder.

Trolling ain't "cheating". It's "beer fishing". :-)

depending on your target fish - trolling/drifting is one of the best ways to learn a lake - @361V - so true!
Trolling will catch fish when nothing else will and helps you identify where schooling fish are - on following trips you can go straight to those areas to start things out.
FYI on the crappie - take someone out with you who knows how to do it (or if your willing to pay - go to a guide) - crappie fishing was probably the most "different" kind of fishing i had to learn when I moved down here. That said.. the "thump"/hookset of doing jigging right is almost as fun as watching a bass hit a topwater lure.

What frustrates me is how I can fish with someone and we'll use the same bait/lure, same location, what appears to be the same presentation, same time, etc. and he'll constantly catch fish.
On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?

I forgot to add, I also want to learn how to fish soft plastics. I bought a variety of styles and colors and some 1/8th and 1/4th oz bullet sinkers with 2/0 and 3/0 hooks. I have had no luck with this.
My main problem is locating areas where fish are. I can't wait till i buy a side imaging ff.

It's the little things like boat placement and feeling confident in your electronics... I would say boat placement in relationship to active fish is probably the single best key in putting yourself in the best position to catch fish. You can be off 20ft and it make all the difference in the world.

Fishing is like any other sport. It takes practice. For me just being on the water with peace and quiet and good friends is enough. If we catch fish that is a bonus.

How do you fish some submerged timber? This is my attempt and tell me if it should change. I put around with my main fish finder on (which is just traditional sonar nothing fancy). I go over some areas that look like structure and mark them. I then circle back and when i get in the area use the trolling motor and this finder up front (which only has down scan imagining) to more or less pin point the structure. Is this a good idea?

thats what i do, and I've been semi productive at it. Its tough, reading electronics well takes time i don't fully get it and I've been on the water 80 hours the last month.
Ive started fishing in the river more and seem to have more luck than the lake, I am little more accustomed to the river that may be why? However, since it cooled off I've been finding fish on docks and timber up against the bank in river or small creeks off the lake. I scan the banks, not with the electronics but just by trolling up the bank and hitting every wood pile i see with live minnows. If they are there you'll find them pretty quick. Make a couple casts and if i don't get a bite in a few mins i move to the next. Its really weird cause this one creek i been fishing off of a main lake has lots of trees and brush off the bank and not all will hold fish. You just gotta try them all. I have yet to catch anything on a jig!! Don't feel bad. Saturday morning I caught 4 nice keepers and probably 12-15 small ones using the method I just described. The main thing is to check a spot, and if it isnt productive MOVE. Good luck!
