I catch some of these regularly at the Neches River in East Texas. They are noticeably different from longears in the same area. Short fat body. I have them ID'ed as Dollar Sunfish. Looking for other thoughts. The pic is not the best, but I count 12 anal fins. LMK what you think.....

If these are hybrids then they are maintaining a strain. I catch these in multiple spots. All with same body shape and coloration. Sunfish ID can always be interesting. Thanks for the reply Banker! Come on with more thoughts guys......

Fishwfly,

These are great photos you've posted, as usual!

While these might be different from other Longears in that area, it sure looks like a pure version of one to me! It has the face and body coloration, the "long ear" and more.

Nice catch! I drove by the Neches Wednesday on the way to Tyler for an appointment. *** Do you ever bank fish the Neches right there in Chandler???

Brad

Take it to the local TP&WD field office in Tyler, they can tell you.

Send or email Ron Smith (Inland Fisheries) Texas Parks&Wildlife a picture of the fish. He will give a I.D. on the fish. Over the past 7 years fish in the sunfish family have been inner breeding a lot. Been seeing and catching a lot of hybrids these past years. thumb

Side Note: Ron's email address in on the TPW Web Page. cheers
