I seem to be having trouble hooking up with fish using a Flipping hook? Not sure what the problem actually is? I just dont seem to get them stuck very good and seem to miss way more fish using a flipping hook. I never hardly ever missed a fish using just the normal texas rigged bent at the top hook. Ive been flipping into holes in the hay grass a lot here lately, so I switched to a flipping hook, I get a lot of bites, and sometimes even let them run off with it and watch my line moving, but when i set the hook, I either barely hook them and they get off, or don't hook them at all? Im using a 7'6 in. Heavy flipping stick. with a fast action tip, and 65lb power pro braid. Ive tried pegging the sinker in place with a bobber stop, and didnt have great hook up rates, so I slid the bobber stop up out of the way thinking I might be blowing there mouth open with the sinker on the hookset. Didnt seem to make a difference. Ive even switched to using the snell knot, which causes the hook to jump up at a great hook setting angle and is supposed to increase your fish hook ups by 20% according to Mike Iaconelli...LOL So far, he is full of bull!!

How hard are ya yankin' on 'em? With a stout rod, braid, & flippin' hook, you have very little shock absorption. You could be tearing the hook free. When I'm flippin' heavy cover or punchin' with a similar set up, I dial my hook set back a notch or so. Once I know they're pegged, I leverage them out with the heavy gear. Owner Jungle Hook is my go-to.

Well I wouldn't "relax" on the hook set in thick cover. Fishing Florida has taught me a lot about flipping heavy cover. I've tested the all the last few months and trokar is by far the best flipping hook I have found. I'm not a fan of trokar for anything else cause they seem to cut the fish much more but the flipping hook sticks em good.

1. Always peg the weight but leave about 1/16 of an inch off the weight
2. Snail Knott is key and has increased my hookset
3. Get rid of power pro and switch to diawa. Either j braid 8 or samurai (broad doesn't make the loud noise like power pro does) this will increase your bites also
4. Yank em hard and reel em fast. Get them out as fast as you can!!! Waiting IMO decreases your hookup in the cover.
5. Crank the drag down tight.
6. Don't get frustrated with missing them. I've lost some roads in the thick stuff but there is another one there ready! Just pitch back in and get ready.

Use Trokars.....they require much less hookset.

I had the same problems last year. I think the big 1-1.5oz weight can blow mouth open or you just get a big hole in mouth when nailing them. I also use Trokars, snell knot, drag tight and peg it. This year just loading rod more slowly and keep putting more and more pressure. Much better year.

Mustad grip pin for the win, and try backing your drag off a little you might be ripping a big hole in the fishes mouth.

this is exactly my approach. If I don't miss the bite, they are in the boat. I also use a tungsten flipping weight. They are smaller for weight and shaped better(shorter). They don't blow the mouth open as easily.
The only other suggestion is from hookset to boat....never stop reeling. Don't give em a chance to get off.

Steez and RTM are right!! I still jack em on the hook set though. Pressure is a must. If you slack for .5 seconds it's gone. It is much easier on a 1/4 oz t rig. It's like the fish in heavy color have a magic way to shake the hook. I guess the cover helps them shake it. But they are fun

My bet is your giving them that tv hookset. The one you see the guys on tv do where it looks like they're trying to break everything they have. It doesn't take much to hook the fish with braid. Put some pressure on the fish and just pull hard, don't try to rip it. Then it's just who wants it more, you or the fish. That hay grass is the worst though, much worse than anything else I've flipped

Brandon Palinik...probably misspelled his name.... has an interesting take about the snell vs. the palomar knot. .....look it up on youtube, sorry but don't know how to attach it. I know I have tried both a bunch over the years and I have gone back to palomar for my knot for punching. Sometimes we make changes because things "suppose" to be better and that is not always the case.

Might not be the hook???
