This time of year when the temps suddenly drop and the first major rain hits has been a disaster for Fairfield in the past. It's been making a nice recovery the last few years. I hope we don't see another fish kill in the next few days

Agreed, was just thinking about that lake. 3 or 4 years ago on Christmas Eve we slaughtered the little ones, couldnt find anything over 12 inches must of caught close to 100...that wasnt long after the big fish kill. By now some of those little guys should be 3lbers or better hopefully. Last I heard TPWD wasnt going to stock it anymore, so maybe nature will find a way.

Oh....plant wasn't running. Water temps were in the 80's like all the other lakes.

If memory serves, the big fish kill there coincided with that crazy summer when we had 65 days in a row without rain and over 100 deg F. I'm sure everybody was running their AC non stop for those 3 months and with the dropping water levels, it was a recipe for big problems.

I spent some time talking with one of the wardens out there about the fish kills. It takes about a week of thick cloud cover with no sun to put the lake in danger. No sunshine for an extended period of time gets the algae levels out of balance and the bad algae suffocates fish. Somewhat similar to how the golden algae bloom works.

I haven't done worth a darn out there since the kills, usually always go few times every year during the winter. I know honey hole did a show out there after the fish kills and he caught some decent size fish just not very many.
