Okay, you fellas who troll for strippers, are your rods fiberglass or graphite? I just broke out my old Philipson fiberglass fly rod and forgot how much a blast it was to drift and troll, but it's hard to find fiberglass fly rods much more that a 5 wt. What length of rods are you using? Material preference?

I prefer fiberglass Shakespeare Ugly Stik. I use them with my downrigger. Seems to take the abuse just a bit better. Single piece 7' medium heavy strength.

I'm with both you Willie, and Craig on this.

I use Ugly Stik striper rods for downrigging and Cabela's CGR fly rods. I have
a 4/5 and a 7/8 CGR. All exceptional glass rods for the money.

You should check out Echo fly rods if you're interested in heavier weight glass. Their bad [censored] glass series is pretty impressive and will definitely have the power to handle bigger fish in an 8 or 9 weight. Although they're not cheap, compared to the top of the line graphite rods, they're a real bargain.
