Just bought an older boat. The TM is a minnkota 24vlt
70lb. Foot controlled.

It's missing the plug that hooks into the outlet at the frontnof the boat. So there's just a positive and a negative wire now.

To see if the TM would work, I hooked it up to a battery on the car. Couldn't get any power and the TM won't run.

Did I do something wrong, or what can I check next to see if I can get it to run.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Sir,
You need 2-12v batteries for a 24v trolling motor to run.

Wire it like this. Don't need the circuit breaker to test but it needs one for the permanent set up

Will some 24 v TM work off 12v just not as fast or powerful?

I know my dads will but it was built like a hundred years ago. lol_2

I wouldn't. The windings in the motor are lighter guage wire and the low voltage builds up to much resistance and could burn the wire into.

You can buy the plug end pretty easy, just have to match it up to your outlet. Worse case, buy a new outlet and plug assembly and install both.

Some were built to run on 12 or 24 volt. Some 12 volt only and some 24 volt only.

I got a maxxum 80 and when checking batteries last week, I KNOW it will run on one, just weaker. Get a Battery tender brand
replacement plug it locks into the socket that comes with it, worth the upgrade.

If you wire it up per the above drawing and it still won't run, there is a three position switch on the side of the foot control labeled "Mom-Off-Cont". Make sure it is in "Mom" (runs when foot control is depressed) or "Cont" (runs all the time).

they will all run on 12 volts!, just not as fast and it will pull a lot of amps. the motor should have turned when you put it on your car battery. If you hook it up on 24 and it runs but not on 12 then you may need to replace your armature brushes.
