Having a hard time making up my mind in which motor to buy. Would like to hear everyone's opinion on which is beat. I am leaning toward the Yamaha.

Mercury EFI 225. It is running strong but I know at some point it will need to be replaced.

250 PRO XS
Orrrrrr... 250 XS
Orrrrrr just got to a 300 XS and really be done banana

No but really. Go with a Merc. Control change isn't worth it. Those SHO motors are good ones now after they've worked out bugs and people love em, but the 250 Pro XS is tried and true. Many years perfecting the Optimax. Not worth the extra cost and control change to me even if you do just wanna try a SHO 4 stroke. Plus correct me if I'm wrong but the 250 Pro XS should be just a hair faster. 1-2 mph.

"Love those awesome failing mercury compressors", says all repair shops... I'll never own another Mercury due to this design.

Mercury compressors do fail sometimes. Some people have worse luck than others, but I've never had mine go out. Every brand has issues that can be scoured. If there was a perfect motor everyone would have it.

The Yamaha is super quiet.

250hp is 250hp.

The SHO gets my nod.

627hp

When the compressor fails, it sends metal fragments all into the injectors. If an injector gets clogged, you will lean out that cylinder and blow it. So basically everytime you lose one you're supposed to spend another $2k-$4k on injector & fuel rail cleaning. Seems that the original compressors were pretty good and then merc had to find a new company to make them and they went to hell. There is a new updated compressor on the market now, but it will take time to see if its longevity is there.

this is the first time I've heard of this being a problem. I have an opti 150 everyone seems to think they're very good motors and I've definitely not had any trouble with mine. What should I be watching for?

Clean the filter strainer often if you fish lakes with grass & scum. If it ever starts making a different noise, even a squeak or the whoop sounds odd, take it to a shop. If you can catch it before it looses a bearing, then you can save the expensive fuel rail & injector cleaning.

Check out you tube for compressor problems and listen to the sound of bad compressors.
