Moving from Waco to FW and never fished the lakes in that neck of the woods. Looking for a starting point to find a lake relatively close and so I can really get to know one or two of them. Work keeps me really busy so I'm lucky to fish once or twice a month. Prefer somewhere that's not infested with people within an hour or so of south FW. Just looking for what you would recommend, and why, if you could only fish a couple of the lakes in the area.
I also have a ten year old that's really coming into his own in the sport of fishing, but still struggles with more advanced techniques like fishing a lot of deep stuff or flipping heavy cover, so I'm hoping to find somewhere that has decent numbers, so he's not so bored on the days when you tend to zero out on those finicky lakes.
Any recommendations or discussion would really be appreciated.

Joe Pool would be what you are looking for.

My favorite DFW area lake is Worth.. you'll find that folks around here either love it or hate it. It has everything from boat docks, rocks, reeds, and multiple kinds of grass. Numbers wise probably not your best choice, though the numbers of 12-13" fish this year has been way up from years past. As of late the bite has been a little tough but should get back to normal pretty soon. Worth doesn't get as crowded as Grapevine, Joe Pool, or Eagle Mountain.

like Buda said, Worth can be fun. If the Bass are off, you can usually run into a bunch of smaller sandbass on the south end of the lake.
Eagle Mountain gets really crowded in the summer. Both lakes, the fish typically stay more shallow.
Joe Pool has some timber in the arms, as well as some of the coves. Gets crazy in the summer with people.
Bridgeport is about an hour away and can be a fun lake.

Joe pool is good for fishing but it gets too many people on the weekends.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looking forward to the move. I’ve had a love hate relationship with Waco and Belton lakes the last few years. Does Joe Pool get crowded in the cooler months also? Is there a lot of fishing pressure?

No it isn't the fishing pressure, it's the jet skis and ski boats. Once it starts getting cooler the pressure will die down. Not many people fish it during the week until late afternoon and almost no one fishes it at night.
I tried Grapevine a couple of weeks ago and I liked it. It was a little better fishing than Pool but again, it is going to have heavy pleasure boat traffic on weekends or evenings. It would be pretty good with your son.

I enjoy Eagle Mountain... can always catch numbers of bass, sand bass, and catfish.., many places to eat just off the water you can pull your boat up to, very close to home, and it's no wake zones in a majority of the areas I typically fish. Fun lake to pull kids on a tube or beach up on the island for lunch and swimming. Lake has a little bit of everything to offer.

My primary rotation for local lakes includes Joe Pool (for a chance at a bigger fish), Lake Worth (for numbers) and Eagle Mountain (docks, docks, docks) most of the time, with an occasional trip to Benbrook or Arlington. I fished Bridgeport recently for the first time and may have to add it to the rotation as well just for the river, back waters and creeks.
When you have time to range farther from home there's more than a dozen other quality bass lakes in the MetroMess, not to mention Fork, so you won't lack for places to fish!

Eagle Mtn and Lake Worth are probably the closest for you. But if you're on the south end of Fort Worth, also look at Lake Whitney which is probably an hour away.

I would choose between Worth and Eagle Mountain for sure for your home lake. Never been on Arlington or Bridgeport so I can't attest to them. On occasion if you just feel like driving a ways, PK is always fishing good here lately.

I've been fishing Eagle Mountain for the past several years, but have kind of burned out on it. Since the floods a few years ago the numbers have not been great and the ramp fees are ridiculous (Lakeview Marina). This year I've been fishing Grapevine. The pleasure boat traffic is no worse than EM and the ramp I use is $5 (Meadowmere).
If you are on the north side of Ft. Worth, I would consider Lewisville, Ray Roberts and Bridgeport. I'm on the north edge of Ft. Worth and Texhoma is only about 90 miles away. Not suitable for a day trip, but makes for a good long weekend.

I fish Joe Pool on a regular basis, I really like it out there obviously, but it is a hard lake to fish with kids IMO - fishing shallow out there is very frustrating, most of the fish are off shore most of the time. And if there is 15mph wind or more it gets rough in a hurry.
You can go down the banks with a square bill and do ok, or go back in the creeks and fish shallow, but fishing off shore is much more productive most of the time, but in my experience its hard for most kids to have the patience or the skills to stay off shore for any length of time.
It doesn't get too crowded once the weather cools off, but in the summer, it gets pretty hectic.
