DANG Ken you should have gone on Sunday! Oh I know! Mike sent that to me about three minutes after that guy caught it. And Yes Billy, the water looks like a cross between pea green soup and brown gravy due to heavy fertilizing. On a good day there might be 18" of visibility. Mike told me a couple years ago he didn't have any confidence in a big Colo spinnerbait and that he had never done any good on one at his lake. I pulled one out one day with him and had two 12's and an 11. I left one with him and he caught a 15.5 a few days later on the bait I gave him.

I agree with you Ken. I'm no expert or pro but , I do like chasing big bass here in my area of DFW and yes I have been know to throw a Drop shot 1% of the time but the other 99% I'm throwing a big 10"-12" worm or a jig that measures about 6-7 inches long. I don't get many bites but the ones I do get are giants! I hear you Skeeter Man. Every time I fish a dropshot rig I feel like I am purposely targeting small fish. If I fished tournaments regularly I would force myself to become proficient at it. I think it is one of, if not the most effective technique for enticing heavily pressured fish into biting. But I go back to my analogy of the ribeye and the carrot stick.....

All I'm gonna say is heed James Biggs' advice.

Couple darned good fishermen only caught 12 fish up to 5# in a full day? Yup, shooting fish in a barrel. The 13.3 was caught last Sunday. She survived the broken jaw

Ken,
I want to go with you sometime and fish nothing but 10lbs test or less with spinning tackle.

Here on Lake Athens, I routinely catch nice bass on ultra-light gear, a 5'6" rod, and using a small Creme grub you'll often see at Walmart. My record, so far, is a 4 lbs. bass and a 26" long catfish. I am curious how large I can go with . . . the 2 lbs. braid I use. The big issue? Fish will run me into the pads and tie me up. I haven't had the line snap yet. Drag settings, of course. If you've never experienced the bass bite on small baits, give it a go just for kicks. It'll surprise you. Try it some day when the bite is very slow. My rig below. Brad

My only concern with catching DD bass on ultralight gear is one has to play the fish carefully, and for quite a bit of time to land her. This may result in increased mortality of the really big fish.

Man I hate finesse or drop-shot fishing with spinning gear-ughh- (no offense intended for all those that love it). I'll do many things to catch big bass so if that way was the best odds game then I would do it, but it's not so I'm glad I don't need to fish that way. Maybe if I did love it then my chances would improve, but there are so many different ways that I enjoy much more.

I'm a believer in Bigg's. Spent a day with him and he told me that my finesse rig would become my favorite rod to fish with. It is now. They all eat it regardless of size.

I probably need to go with him to get my finesse rig faith improved! I haven't met Mr Biggs but from all I have heard I'm sure he could fish circles around me for big or little fish and with any rig! If y'all go give us all a report!
