Back on February 9,2012 while fishing the crystal clear waters of the Comal River with my buddy Mike aka USMC-GY I caught a very old Redbreast. The Fish put up a nice fight on my ultralight tackle and even pulled a little drag. Once I saw the fish in the crystal clear water I knew I had a record. The length of the fish was 11.80" and is still the current Catch&Release Record Redbreast for the Comal River. When I released the fish me and Mike watched it swim away very slowly only to have a about a five pound bass swim right up behind it. I guess the bass felt sorry for it and let the fish swim away. The second fish is more resent. It was an old Bull Rio that was caught on the West Nueces River August 21,2017. The fish was 11.20" long. It also put up a good fight on the ultralight and it is the current Catch&Release Record for the West Nueces River. Just like the Redbreast the Rio slowly swam away knowing that was the last fight. Two GREAT fish that made the records book. It just don't get any better! fish

One fantastic post with two very old fish! Great ending for two old fish for sure! Not many anglers around that can say they had caught two very old fish that both became records! Good job Chuck! woot

Side Note: Both rivers where your fish were caught have crystal clear water and are spring fed. Do you think this played a factor in the ages of those fish?

Thanks Curtis,Etranch, and Gander for the replies. cheers Curtis: Most fish need just about perfect conditions to achieve their maximum age. The areas where these two fish were caught provided them the chance for a long life. Clear fresh water, good current, plenty of grass/reed beds,(cover),plenty of food, deep pockets, and good spawning areas. Not to mention a nice mix of predators and little to none fishing pressure. These fish had a great life for sure. thumb

Makes a lot of since on the near perfect conditions. What type of fish have the best chance to live longer lives? Your opinion. hmmm

Nice post Chuck! How old would you say both of those fish were? Also what is the life expectancy of a Redbreast and Rio? Again super fish and both making the record book during their life span.

Life expectancy of a Redbreast in water that is in good condition is 7 to 8 years. A Rio's life expectancy in water that is in good condition is 4 to 5 years. I would guess the Redbreast to be in the eight year range and the Rio in the five year range. Both fish were caught in good fisheries. thumb
