Howdy y'all,

So I want to try my hands on casting net to catch shed and minnows; mostly to see if I can learn the skill and enjoy it and use it. Any recommendations on size and what to get without putting too much out of pocket if I don't like it. I have seen some 3/8" mesh with 4 foot radius, but what does that mean in real life application. Is 4' radium big enough? Lastly, if someone in Allen, Plano, Richardson/Garland area want to sell theirs, let me know, specially if it comes with lesson or two smile

Thanks
Munawar

If you're going after minners, I'd try and find a 1/4" mesh net. You'll probably have to look online since most places don't carry them. You can find 3-1/2' radius, 3/8 mesh nets about anywhere, and that's what I'd start with for catching shad.

Forget minnows and go for the shad. Get a 3/8 mesh by 4 or 5 foot radius. Walmart sells them. Start with a cheap one while you learn to throw and then upgrade after you have torn this one up learning.

I wouldn't waste my time with a 4 foot net. Get a 6 foot. It will have twice the coverage, catch more bait and is not any harder to learn how to throw.

Get a 5 or six. My 12 yr old daughter can throw a 5 most of the time. Seriously though it's not difficult is you keep it simple

Went to Walmart last night late to look for them, but they had some "Granite" brand more expensive than Academy. I'll check out Academy on Sunday and probably get 6' version of one below. Unless all of you suggest against it.

And get yourself a bucket to keep the net in. It will not fit back into the storage box you buy it in.

+1, another tip is to put a little laundry conditioner in the bucket with your net mixed with water. This helps keep the mono net soft with less tangles and makes it smell a thousand times better!

Fitec RS750 Series Super Spreader 5' Cast Net

I had a Fitec RS1000 in 5' or 6' that lasted me a long time. The 750 is 3/4 pound of weight per foot and the 1000 is 1 pound per foot. The 1000 is gonna sink faster, leaving less time for bait to swim out.
I'm using an Old Salt Ebb tide nowadays that's a pound per foot and has been good to me so far.
