I fished Lake Brownwood yesterday till about 2pm. I'm kinda new to lake fishing cats(not rivers). I had a grand plan on some creek and river channels yesterday in roughly 35' of water. Funny thing is my electronics showed a cloudy return on everything below 30'. All fish were showing suspended above the cloudy line. My buddy tells me this might be early turnover. The fish I caught yesterday I mostly caught suspend drifting or getting shallower than 30'. No blues! All channel cats on blue cat set-ups. So, I'd like to hear some ideas and or advise for this type of condition. How does a guy deal with this? Thanks!

Sounds like your seeing thermocline pardna... You most likely won't see turnover until mid October to mid November down there depending on the weather... If the lake even turns over at all. Suspended hooks and baits can and will work during thermocline but I'll still fish baits right down in it.... From my past exeriences, signs of a bad lake turnover will usually fill the graph, the water is usually nasty with junk floating around everywhere, and it smells... cheers

I thought the same Rick but I've fished 7 lakes this year and not a sign of thermocline. Why now after we've had 55 degree nights then returned to 100 degree days? Sumtin awry! hammer

If it's been real windy or the lake has been churning like after the recreational boaters wreck the lake it will show sediment in the water that looks like a thermocline line. If your lake has been calm this past week you could have a little thermocline in areas that the water doesn't circulate like channels. Lake Lewisville usually turns over or mixes by mid October. Usually you can see and smell it in the north end of the lake first. Our drinking water starts to taste nasty when the lake turns.

Good info. I definitely smelled that old shad slime smell in areas. Also had a weird slime on the boat that will require sandblasting. I think Rick's right! It's shad. Heehee

Lakes are low on saturated oxygen right now but it generally shows up on certain parts of the lake, not all of it.

As far as "turnover"...it's not going to be turnover that you are seeing. Most north Texas lakes don't experience true turnover. Our lakes mix.

Turnover happens when we have a very harsh cool down for an extended period of time "when" the lake is still warm. So, if it happens it will happen generally in mid to late October. DFW's earliest recorded freeze is OCT 22.

On the contrary, our lakes mix pretty well. Mixing is when cooler surface temperates begin sinking into the lower part of the water column at a slow pace...mixing the dead and decayed oxygen depleated water with cooler oxegen rich water.

Even during the mixing process you will smell some funky water in certain areas of the lake with foam, etc.

I think you were seeing a small thermocline on ur sounder... thumb

Thanks for the info fella's! I just got the helix 12 awhile back and still getting used to the new look of things. It's an awesome machine that really picks up details. The operator is still getting educated though. Appreciate y'all's input!
