All,
The explosion of High School Bass fishing has been crazy. I'm the president of McKinney Bass Club and I've been hit up by a couple of Allen High School parents to see if someone or possible several members want to provide a boat and a Saturday or 6 for the kids.
What is the boaters responsibility and expectations? Is this strictly a volunteer thing or do the kids ( ie. parents ) pay a boater fee ( ex. $40 ) to cover gas, oil, wear n tear, etc. ? Is there additional insurance requirement?
thanks for the responses.
Jeff

I am a teacher and a coach and just starting a club here where I teach and coach. The information letter that I am sending home with the kids and in our first meeting, which is today, I am including gassing the boat as part of the tournament day cost.

insurance; min 300,000 liability required boat fee's; launch is covered, gas and oil is on the boater, but the club or parents always wanted to help with that when i did it a couple years ago

You have to supply life jackets so if you only carry 2 throw another in. We are given gift cards for gas typically after the event but it's not required or expected.

Also I thought you had to pass a background check by each school you captain for which can take a while. I had to do this a few years ago when I was a boat captain for Allen.

I fish almost every weekend somewhere, either pre-fishing, tournament or just for fun. So when I carry a HS team, I figure it's just a matter of lake choice. I'm already going to spend money for gas and cause wear and tear on the boat with or without them. The only time I've ever told them that they would have to pay for fuel (and rooms) is for Regionals, State and the National Championship. It's never been a problem and the parents/anglers still offer every trip, I just won't take it. This year, the club has voted for the captains to receive a $40 gas card for every tourney. A very nice gesture that is appreciated.

I have been the adviser for our club for a few years. The circuit we fish dictates how much money a boat captain can receive for each tournament (no more than $100). The captains job is to supply the boat, carry insurance on the boat, and operate the boat during the course of the tournament. Depending on the rules the captain may or may not fish, but cannot contribute to the students daily catch. All of our captains must pass criminal background check in order to be an approved captain.

Thanks Everyone for the responses.
Our next Club meeting is Monday. I'm going to see of anyone wants to be a boat captain. I wasn't sure if this was purely a volunteer thing, background checks, Expected re-imbursments, insurance requirements, etc..
I'll be honest, I can't imagine letting my son/daughter go fishing with a complete stranger - So getting asked by parents to take thier kid fishing ( who don't even know us ) was kind of out of the blue. Our Club insurance doesn't allow anyone under 18 to fish in our tournaments, so we don't get many request like this. While this wouldn't be a MBC sponsored activity, I appreciate everyone's response.
Thanks! Jeff

I would read through this post and their facebook posts before setting the rules, might save you alot of headaches in the future... http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/12216833/Re:_What_a_shame!!!#Post12216833 & this one http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/12438571/Lewisville_Today#Post12438571 IMO the captians should not be allowed to fish, just totally remove those bad senarios of cheating.
